MATCH POINT: Our tennis tipping column previews the Men’s Australian Open with two recommended BETDAQ bets.
Slightly later than usual, but the Australian Open does go ahead which has got to be good news for tennis fans.
The organisers have moved mountains for it to go ahead – those travelling to Melbourne were required to test negative before taking a charter flight to Australia in January.
Since then, they have had to undertake a 14-day quarantine period where they could only leave their room for five hours each day.
Hardly ideal preparation for the first Grand Slam of the year which has led to some players even using the walls of hotel bedrooms for practice!
In the Men’s tournament Roger Federer (recovering from knee surgery) and Andy Murray (tested positive for COVID) are notable absentees which leaves Novak Djokovic as the top seed from Rafael Nadal who bids to overtake Federer in the race for the number of slam titles won. However, Nadal’s quest for win number 21 has to have a question mark given the Spaniard is nursing a back injury.
The BETDAQ SPORTSBOOK has Djokovic at 2.3 but there’s a potent challenge from both
Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev who are priced at 7.0 and 5.0 respectively and are my two selections pre-start of tournament.
Both represent the new generation and last year’s narrow runner-up (6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4) Thiem should now be playing with more confidence after his first Slam success at the US Open back in September. His game is clearly suited to Australia and I’d back him to beat Djokovic 12 months later.
Daniil Medvedev comes into this on the back of his part in Russia’s win for the ATP Cup title on these same courts.
Medvedev is on a 14 match winning streak and 10 of those wins after come against Top 10 players.
In a year where the form book is hard to read – Medvedev represents a player very much match fit and at the top of his game.
