Daniil Medvedev, one of my pre-tournament picks faces Alexei Popyrin in their third round game on Saturday (not earlier than 9.30am).
I’m hoping this will be straight forward for Medvedev against Alexei Popyrin who will have his home crowd rooting for him.
The two players are split by 92 ranking points and have only met once previously – in the second round at Wimbledon last year with Medvedev losing the first set in a tie-break but winning the next three 6-1, 6-4 and 6-4.
Popyrin believes he is an improved player now and said: “I’m a better player right now than I was at Wimbledon, I’ve gotten a lot of experience last year and I did a lot of work in pre-season. I’m not star-struck by being in the third round anymore. I’m more self-centered and focused.
“I’m going to look to play my game, be aggressive and on the front foot. Hopefully I get the chances I had at Wimbledon last year and convert them.”
I think that’s true – but the bad news for Popyrin is that Medvedev is also an improved player and has looked good in his first two rounds beating Frances Tiafoe (dropped second set) and Spain’s Pedro Martinez in straight sets.
A straight sets win for Medvedev makes plenty of appeal at around 1.82.
