MATCH POINT: Our tennis tipping column is 29 points up since it started. The next bet comes in the Australian Open Men’s Final on Sunday morning, it’s Dominic Thiem v Novak Djokovic.
A nice boost to our P&L with the success of Sofia Kenin over Garbine Muguruza in the Women’s Final of the Australian Open on Saturday.
I was also on a 2-0 set victory but was more than happy to collect on the win bet after Kenin dropped the opening set 4-6 !!
It was one way traffic after that with Kenin winning the next two sets 6-2 6-2 to lift the title.
Still some work left though in Melbourne with the small matter of the Men’s Final on Sunday morning with Dominic Thiem v Novak Djokovic.
I was on Djokovic in my outright preview so it goes without saying where my allegiances lie in the final. I could certainly do with a Djokovic win to mop up some of the less than successful outright predictions.
Don’t forget Sunday’s final is 0% COMMISSION ON BETDAQ as are all tennis markets.
Djokovic holds a 6-4 career lead over Thiem in their head to head encounters but Thiem has won the last two meetings at Roland Garros and the ATP Finals in London to make it interesting here.
The killer stat though might be that Djokovic has never lost in the semi-finals or beyond at the Australian Open and will contest his eighth final at the Rod Laver Arena.
Apart from a 17th Grand Slam title as Novak goes after Federer and Nadal, Djokovic will also return to being the world’s number one player with a win on Sunday.
If it doesn’t come on Sunday – it can’t be long before Thiem wins a first Grand Slam title.
He’s had a tougher road to the final – grinding out wins over Spanish top seed Rafael Nadal in the quarters and Germany’s seventh seed Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals.
Djokovic has also had an extra day to recover. A fact not lost on Thiem who said: “There are disadvantages but also advantages.
“I think it’s also a little bit of a challenge to have all the time one day off and all of a sudden two. Of course, I have less time to regenerate.
“But with all the adrenaline and everything, it’s going to be fine.”
Djokovic will need to start better than he did against Federer but if he does start well I think a 3-0 win in entirely possible at around 2.64 and will also cover with a 3-1 win at 3.85.
