MATCH POINT: Our tennis tipping column is 27 points up since it started. The next bet comes in the Roger Federer v Novak Djokovic Men’s semi-final on Thursday morning. The tennis legends are meeting for the 50th time.
A real treat for tennis fans on Thursday morning with the two titans Federer and Djokovic doing battle on the Rod Laver Arena with a place in Sunday’s Australian Open Final at stake.
It’s the 50th time the two legends have met, with Djokovic holding a narrow 26-23 career lead but possibly the most revealing stat of all is that Federer has not beaten Djokovic at a Grand Slam since 2012.
There’s no doubt that Federer has had to work the harder to progress to this stage, straight set wins in the first two rounds were followed up by a marathon five setter against John Millman which Federer looked down and out in the final ‘Championship tie-break’ when 8-4 down but he fought back to win 10-8 and in the quarter finals he was even more Herculean saving SEVEN match points to beat Tennys Sandgren in another five setter.
Fed suffered a groin problem during that game and has had a race against time to get ready for Thursday’s showdown.
He said after the match on Tuesday: “I don’t know if you can call it an injury. It’s just pain and problems. I need to figure it out.
“You have an extra day, adrenaline, there are a lot of things [to help]. Two good nights of sleep, doctors, physios.
“Hopefully we’ll find out that it’s actually nothing bad.”
Djokovic, by contrast, has dropped just one set in his five matches.
The big sub-plot to the game is the race to retire as the GOAT – greatest of all time.
Current majors title:
🎾 Federer 20
🎾 Rafael Nadal 19
🎾 Djokovic 16
With Dominic Thiem beating Nadal in the quarter finals there is the prospect of Fed putting some daylight at the top or Djokovic continue to narrow the gap.
Haven’t had much luck with the pre-tournament plays but am relying on Djokovic to go the distance and lift the title for a record-extending eighth time.
My BETDAQ recommendation in the semi is either a 3-0 and 3-1 scoreline in favour of Djokovic.
Don’t forget it’s 0% COMMISSION ON BETDAQ for all tennis markets.
But even if you don’t have a bet on this one, it’s surely a match just to settle back and enjoy. Just a shame it’s not the actual final as it deserves to be.
