MATCH POINT: Our tennis tipping column previews Thursday’s first semi-final between Naomi Osaka v Serena Williams in the Australian Open with recommended BETDAQ bets.
And then there were four. The women’s semi-finals take place overnight and whilst I only have one of the players from my three original ante-post selections the good news is that Jennifer Brady was the biggest price of the trio at 21.0 on BETDAQ and she is now odds-on to reach Saturday’s final.
First up though is the small matter of the first semi-final which looks the most interesting with Naomi Osaka taking on Serena Williams.
It’s number 3 seed v number 10 so things haven’t gone entirely to plan but with the 2019 champion taking on the 2017 champion it’s not entirely a shock either.
The biggest surprise to me is that two of the biggest names in the sport have only faced each other competitively in four matches and its honours even with two wins apiece. Williams has won the last two but Osaka ran out an impressive 6-2 6-4 winner to take down the US Open in 2018 – their only prior meeting in a Slam in a controversial final.
There is huge pressure on Williams’ shoulders who is bidding to equal Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Majors. Whether that pressure manifests as a positive or negative energy is hard to say but surely Williams must now consider this a massive opportunity at this stage of her career?
Both players have only dropped one set on the route to the semis and whilst there is so little to split them – the age gap of 16 years means I am sticking with Osaka.
It wouldn’t be a major bet for me but Osaka to win 2-1 at around 4.1 on BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE is a tempter.
