Tottenham were arguably guilty of underestimating FC Basle in last week’s Europa League quarter-final at White Hart Lane and they now face an uphill struggle to qualify in Switzerland tonight.
Andre Villas-Boas will at least be relieved his men fought back from two goals down against the Swiss champions to force a 2-2 draw. But we saw last night in the Barcelona v Paris St Germain Champions League tie how important away goals are.
Realistically, Spurs will have to score at least two goals to avoid exiting a tournament their manager has made no secret about wanting to win.
Basel have a tremendous defensive record in this season’s competition, conceding only four goals in total in their last eight matches (and two were last week) and they don’t look a bad price at around 2.46 on BETDAQ to win later. Tottenham are underdogs at around 3.05.
Spurs seem to enjoy doing things the hard way in this competition, having already needed a last-gasp equaliser against Lyon to send them through in the last-32 and then squandering a 3-0 aggregate lead versus Inter Milan in the last round, before squeezing through on away goals.
But their luck might run out later. Basel have not lost a competitive home match since August 2012, winning 12 of their 15 matches at St. Jakob-Park and, with the visitors missing the influential foursome of Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon, William Gallas and Jermain Defoe, they may fall short against the only domestic champions left in the tournament.
