Wigan pulled off one of the biggest FA Cup shocks in history on the weekend when they beat Manchester City 1-0 in their first FA Cup final but it’s back to reality tonight for the Latics with a trip to Arsenal. They know they must win to have any hopes of avoiding becoming the first side to lift the FA Cup and get relegated in the same season.
However, they have lost nine of their last ten visits to Arsenal and the hosts have won seven of their last nine matches as they battle north London rivals Tottenham for the lucrative fourth spot and Champions League qualification.
Roberto Martinez’s side will take heart from the fact they were in a similar position last year and did win here – their only three points at the Emirates in Premier League history – but they’ve failed a lot easier tests than this one this season.
The Gunners have drawn their last two home games but Spurs’ win over Stoke has made the race for fourth spot a real battle and Arsene Wenger has made no secret of his determination to secure top European action for a 16th successive season.
The visitors should make a battle of it, though, and, buoyed by their heroics on the weekend, can ensure it’s a tight affair. Backing Wigan with a +1.5 Asian handicap is therefore recommended.
