PREVIEW
England U21s arrived in Israel for the U21s European Championship on the back of a nine-game winning streak in which they had conceded no goals and the layers on BETDAQ had them as third favourites to lift the trophy. So it’s a real disappointment for Stuart Pearce’s men that this evening’s game against Israel is for them a dead rubber, as defeats to both Italy and Norway have seen them already exit the competition.
Israel drew with Norway 2-2 in their opening match but were then hammered 4-0 by England’s conquerors Italy and they need to thrash the Young Lions later and hope the Italians beat Norway handsomely to progress to the semi-finals.
Pearce now looks unlikely to have his contract renewed by the FA and has already indicated he will rotate his squad after the first-choice picks failed to make an impact. There have been excuses, though, with this tournament coming after a long season for many of England’s players like Jordan Henderson, Steven Caulker and Wilfried Zaha. And unlike some of the other leading nations here, senior internationals such as Jack Wiltshire, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jack Rodwell and Phil Jones are all missing from the set-up, despite being eligible to play.
Teams like Spain and Italy have brought some of their senior players and it has given them a significant advantage. And against Norway the players also struggled in the hot conditions which will give hosts Israel an edge later and, knowing they are flying home straight after the match, means many England players might have one eye on their holiday already.
You’d be a brave punter to trust England at around 1.72 on BETDAQ after what they have shown here so far and backing Israel with a +0.5/1 Asian handicap at around 1.98 on BETDAQ looks a decent bet.
