PREVIEW
We couldn’t have been further away from a DRAW last night than in our worst dreams.
Plenty of head-scratching still going on about THAT result but it was the most mesmerising 20 minutes of football we’ve ever witnessed.
Brazil were humiliated and now it’s the turn of their arch rivals Argentina.
The worrying thing for Argentina and their supporters is that they pretty much have the same profile as Brazil going into the semi-finals. Not playing especially well but getting the results to progress. Each of Argentina’s five wins at this tournament have come by a single goal margin.
Could it be an all-European final after all?
The participation of Netherlands striker Robin van Persie is still a major question mark after he has been struggling with a stomach complaint.
Manager Louis van Gaal said Van Persie would only play if he was completely fit.
“Robin van Persie has an intestinal problem and I didn’t want to take a risk. He is a very important player for us. In principle, my captains always play, but only if they’re 100%.”
Both sides won all three of their Group games and have a lot of history in the World Cup. Argentina beat Holland 3-1 in the final in 1978 but have generally found the Dutch tough opponents.
