PREVIEW
Manchester United could conceivably go 18 points clear in the Premier League tonight with victory at West Ham and if Wigan somehow beat Manchester City at the Etihad. The latter scenario seems unlikely, but that game won’t concern Sir Alex Ferguson in the slightest as his team close in on a 20th league crown.

West Ham are in fair form, unbeaten in their last three including good draws at Liverpool and Southampton. They always raise their game for the visit of old rivals United, but even at their best they will struggle later.

United have won eight of their last nine league games – the only blip was the 2-1 defeat to City earlier this month – and, while they haven’t been their electric self of late, they’ve conceded just two goals in eight matches. They were both in the City reverse which is quite an extraordinary recent run.

Robin van Persie ended his goal drought with a penalty against Stoke and he has already scored twice in two meetings against the Hammers this season. The first was the winner in the corresponding league fixture and the second a glorious last-minute equaliser here at Upton Park.

Eight of the last ten meetings between these sides has ended with only one team scoring and, considering United’s brilliant defensive record of late, that probably is the best path to go down in a tricky little game to call.
