ODDSTRACKER: A dramatic end to The Genesis Invitational which saw the winner decided on the second play-off hole is the perfect subject for this week’s Oddstracker.

Although Max Homa will now be celebrating a second PGA Tour victory, it’s pretty fair to say that few would have thought it would have come in the manner that it came.

The Genesis Invitational, one of the biggest events on the calendar, and played at one of the sport’s best courses in Riviera, has had a habit of throwing up some dramatic finishes, but Sunday’s finish will live long in the memory.

It had looked for the majority of the final round that Sam Burns, the man who held a two-shot lead prior to its culmination, would end his search for a first PGA Tour title and after a superb up-and-down on the short par-four 10th, he was available at 1.91.

However, things took a turn for the worse soon after as a hooked tee shot on the 12th kickstarted a dismal match that saw him drift out of contention.

As Burns buckled under the pressure, two players, both chasing their second PGA Tour title, were turning it on when it mattered.

While it’s less surprising that Homa had only won one title in his career, the fact that Tony Finau has is quite incredible given his consistency over a number of seasons.

And as Burns fell away, Finau (26.0 at the start of the day) and Homa (12.0) began to slug it out as a dramatic two-horse race transpired.

Finau’s price went as low as 1.33 as he hit the front with one hole to play after back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17, but after Homa birdied the 17th tie and then stuffed his approach on the final hole, he stormed into favouritism at 1.8.

Inexplicably, though, Homa missed the short three-foot putt and it was onto extra holes.

Finau looked to hold the upper hand at 18 as his opponent’s drive ended up against a tree, but a remarkable up-and-down from Homa kept him in it.

They were both priced at 3.5 ahead of the second play-off hole, but after Finau failed to save par having found a greenside bunker, it was Homa who would end up taking home the title.
