Whyte v Povetkin: Drifting odds show unfancied Povetkin upset nailed-on Whyte
It was certainly a shock to many boxing fans and it was certainly a shock to BETDAQ punters as Alexander Povetkin knocked out Dillian Whyte on Saturday evening.
The Russian heavyweight, an unfancied 3.75 shot when the market opened in late June, was always seen as the big outsider of the bout to the extent that Whyte was first quoted at an incredibly short 1.29.
The expectation that this was a one-horse race was so much so that Povetkin drifted further to 5.0 on the afternoon of the fight, with Whyte holding his position as the overwhelming favourite at 1.29.
Plenty saw that Povetkin price as being too big and the Russian was backed before the off and as the bell rung for round one, he was available at 4.5, while Whyte also attracted support and was backed into an even shorter 1.22.
It looked like being smooth sailing for favourite backers as Whyte was soon on top and after hurting his opponent in the second, he shortened further to 1.14 with Povetkin out to 5.0.
Further damage from the British fighter saw Povetkin drift out to 7.0 as the fight began to seem to take its toll on the 40-year-old. Whyte, meanwhile, looked full of energy and was now only 1.08 for victory.
The writing then appeared to be on the wall as Whyte knocked the Russian to the floor early in the fourth round which saw Povetkin odds drift significantly out to 10.0, with Whyte now just 1.03.
Further pressure was put on Povetkin and Whyte had him down again later in the round – a move which saw his odds of victory now out to 11.0. Whyte, on the other hand, was just 1.02 for his 28thcareer victory.
However, having managed to beat the count, Povetkin then pulled off the virtually unthinkable as he unleashed a devastating uppercut knocking Whyte out and completing a comeback of epic proportions.
