I’d venture to say that there’s not a golf tipster in the entire world who can match our run over the last couple of weeks, as we followed up our 62.0 win on Grillo at the Frys.com Open with more success: Patton Kizzire and Jason Bohn, recommended right here at 122.0 and 43.0, respectively, tied for second in last week’s Shriners Open, finishing just a shot behind winner Smylie Kaufman (and if you know anyone who was tipping Kaufman prior to the tournament, be careful– they could be a warlock).
Let’s hope the good times continue to roll in this week’s CIMB Classic, an event that has once again drawn a world class field to far-flung Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This will mark the third straight year that Kuala Lumpur Country Club’s West Course will be used for the competition, but some players in the field have even more experience at this track, as it’s hosted the European Tour’s Maybank Malaysian Open since 2010. Ryan Moore is the two-time defending champion and can currently be backed at 23.0 at BETDAQ, but I’d be careful about investing in Moore, who has more missed cuts (5) than top-10 finishes (2) since the beginning of the summer.
Henrik Stenson is the highest-ranked player in the field and he’s the clear favorite at BETDAQ (8.0), followed by Kevin Na (16.0), Hideki Matsuyama (20.0), and Branden Grace (20.0). Those odds may sound a little short to some– and I may be inclined to agree– but keep in mind that there are only 78 players in the field this week, half the number we see in a “full field” event. If there’s ever a week to back Stenson at a price like 8.0, this might be the one.
That being said, I’m going in a different direction. Here are my selections:

Recommendations to BACK (odds in parenthesis)
Patrick Reed (25.0)- Reed followed up a strong effort in the President’s Cup with a splendid performance in last week’s Hong Kong Open, shooting in the 60s all four rounds and finishing third. This is his third straight trip to Kuala Lumpur so he obviously likes the course/tournament, and he was in contention last year before a final-round 74 dropped him into a tie for 26th. Based on what we’ve seen over the past six weeks– remember, Reed finished 4th at last month’s Deutsche Bank Championship– I have a feeling a victory is right around the corner for the young Texan, and it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if it happened this week.
Anirban Lahiri (29.0)- Lahiri will be a popular pick this week, and make no mistake: he should be. The 28-year old native of India has been on fire recently, notching top-5 finishes in five of his last seven worldwide events. He was in the mix in Hong Kong last week after a third-round 65 and wound up finishing 7th, and he placed 5th in August’s PGA Championship, proving that he can hang with the very best on the very biggest of stages. More importantly, he won the Maybank Malaysian Open on this course in February, shooting 62-68 over the weekend to edge Bernd Wiesberger by just one shot. Even at a relatively short price like 29.0, Lahiri should be backed enthusiastically here.
Matt Jones (110.0)- If you’re looking for a longshot you could do a whole lot worse than Jones, who played well in last month’s “playoffs”, his highlight being a 4th-place finish at the Deutsche Bank Championship. He is very familiar with Kuala Lumpur CC, having competed in this event in each of the past two years, and he obviously has a liking for the place because he keeps coming back. Last year he played very well after a disastrous opening-round 81, so he may feel that he’s figured the course out a little bit. At better than 100/1, Jones is certainly worth a small bet.
TOURNAMENT MATCH BETS
Danny Lee (1.91) vs. Luke Donald (1.91)
Donald has quietly been putting together a career renaissance over the past few months, but I’d have trouble backing him this week against Lee, an ascending player with loads of confidence after finishing 2nd at the Tour Championship. Lee played in this event last year and played well, carding 20 birdies over four rounds and finishing 13th. There aren’t many players in the field this week I’d recommend head-to-head against Lee. Recommendation: Lee at 1.91
Justin Thomas (1.91) vs. Adam Scott (1.91)
Scott is certainly the more accomplished player, but I’m not sure he’s the better player as we sit here today. Thomas has made nine straight cuts and he finished 3rd at the Frys.com Open two weeks ago, his last event. Scott had a good week at the Japan Open but his schedule has been spotty, and he’s surely still adjusting to the standard-length putter that has been forced upon him. Recommendation: Thomas at 1.91
