The PGA Tour returns to the Nevada desert and TPC Summerlin this week for the Shriners Open, the second event of the wraparound season and a tournament that has drawn a fairly strong field despite falling in October, a traditional off-time for professional golfers. There’s no true offseason in pro golf anymore, though, and thank God for it! This writer cashed a nice little ticket on Emiliano Grillo last week, who was recommended right here at 62.0.
The red-hot Grillo is back in action this week and can currently be backed at 43.0 at BETDAQ, a fair price for a guy who’s obviously playing with loads of confidence at the moment. World No. 5 Rickie Fowler is making his season debut and he’s the favorite at 12.0, followed by Brooks Koepka (22.0) and Ryan Moore (25.0). Ben Martin is the defending champ and can be had at a very friendly 120.0, but even at that price I wouldn’t recommend backing Martin based on his recent form (68th or worse in 3 of his last 4 starts). These three guys, on the other hand…

Recommendations to BACK (odds in parenthesis)
Brooks Koepka (22.0)- The odds are shorter that you’d like, but not short enough to keep me away from the long-hitting Floridian who shot 15-under 269 in this event last year, good enough for a 4th-place finish. Koepka likes desert golf, with his lone PGA Tour win coming at TPC Scottsdale, and his game looked like it was in good shape last week, as he was within striking distance of the lead on Sunday (9-under through three rounds) before a triple-bogey sunk his chances. Don’t be surprised if young Koepka closes the deal this week.
Jason Bohn (43.0)- One of only two players in the field who has finished in the top-20 in this event in each of the past three years (Jimmy Walker the other), Bohn is playing the best golf of his career at age 42 and he’s a great value this week at better than 40/1. Though he’s never mentioned in discussions of “elite” or even “almost elite” players, Bohn has racked up seven top-15 finishes in his last 13 starts and he nearly won the Frys.com Open last week, finishing just a shot out of the playoff. If you’re looking for an underrated veteran who is playing career-best golf and will be teeing it up at one of his favorite courses on Tour, look no further. Bohn is your man.
Patton Kizzire (122.0)- Kizzire led the Web.com Tour money list in 2015 thanks to a closing nine-week stretch that saw him win twice and log four top-10s. That stretch ended earlier this month at the Web.com Tour Championship, where he finished 5th and earned playing privileges on the PGA Tour for the first time. The 29-year old Alabama native is a bit of a wildcard, no doubt– he got married last week, missing the Frys.com Open as a result– but he’s been a birdie-making machine over the past year, leading the Web.com Tour in putting, par-breakers, and scoring average. I think he’s worth a shot at the current price.
TOURNAMENT MATCH BETS
Tony Finau (1.91) vs. Scott Piercy (1.91)
Piercy has often battled injuries through the years, but when he’s healthy he’s a veritable cash register at this event, finishing 10th or better in three of his last four appearances (including last year, when he finished 7th). It probably doesn’t hurt that he’s a local resident with his own locker at TPC Summerlin. I very much like his chances against Finau, who hasn’t played particularly well since a good showing at the PGA Championship. Recommendation: Piercy at 1.91
Hunter Mahan (1.91) vs. Keegan Bradley (1.91)
Bradley’s golf has been solid but unspectacular over the past couple of months, which is more than you could’ve said for Mahan six weeks ago, when the Texan found himself amidst one of the worst slumps of his career. Mahan seems to be coming out of it now, though, following up September’s breakthrough performance at the Deutsche Bank Championship with solid play at both the BMW Championship and last week’s Frys.com Open. He’s shown the ability to excel at TPC Summerlin, too, shooting 68 or better in three of his last four competitive rounds on the course. I expect Mahan’s recent surge to continue this week. Recommendation: Mahan at 1.91
