PREMIER LEAGUE TUESDAY: We preview Tuesday’s Premier League game between CHELSEA v SOUTHAMPTON.
CHELSEA V SOUTHAMPTON
7.45pm Just as Spurs were putting the pressure on Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table, Chelsea struck a big mental blow by beating them 4-2 in their FA Cup semi-final at Wembley the weekend. However, the fact remains that Chelsea are only four points clear now in the league, and need to win here to put the pressure on Spurs to win a tricky away game to Crystal Palace Wednesday night.
The markets expect a home win, with the odds at the time of writing; Chelsea 1.45, Southampton 9.0 and the draw 4.8. Chelsea have won eight of their last ten in all competitions, and you’d have to say that the 4-2 win over Spurs was the best possible way to respond to their disappointing loss in Old Trafford. It’s hard to see anything but a Chelsea win here – they’ve won 11 of their last 12 at Stamford Bridge.
Southampton didn’t play at the weekend so they’ll have had plenty of time to prepare for this one. However, looking at their last game against Manchester City they’ll have to vastly improve things if they have any hope of coming away with a draw or win. They were thrashed 3-0 at home, however they did record wins against West Brom and the in-form Crystal Palace before that.
We expect Southampton to arrive in to Stamford Bridge to defend and attempt to counter attack. It’s hard to see them having much of the ball though so we feel defending will be their number one goal here. With Chelsea a bit short for backing at 1.45, under 2.5 goals appeals at 2.08 – we can see a 1-0 or 2-0 Chelsea win here, with Southampton making them work hard to find a way through. It might be worth considering Draw/Chelsea in the HT/FT market too – that’s currently around 4.5.
