PREMIER LEAGUE SATURDAY: We preview Saturday’s Premier League games with a recommended BETDAQ bet and extended stats including LIVERPOOL v ARSENAL at 5.30pm.
NORWICH V CHELSEA
12.30pm It’s so early in the Premier League season; however we already have some fascinating situations. Anything but three points here will put the pressure on Frank Lampard and with Chelsea already in 15th, failing to win here would see them close enough to the bottom three. Norwich got their first win of the season last weekend here against Newcastle after a tough start to life in the Premier League away against Liverpool. Chelsea were very poor last weekend at home to Leicester and they really look like they could finish mid-table this season – we have to see more from them before considering backing them at odds on away from home. Norwich have goals in them and we’re happy to lay Chelsea at 1.88. We expect a much closer game than those odds suggest.
BETDAQ BEST BET:
Lay Chelsea at 1.88.

MATCH STATS
- Norwich City are winless in their last 10 Premier League contests against Chelsea (D2 L8) since a 3-0 win at Carrow Road in December 1994 under John Deehan.
- In all competitions, Chelsea are unbeaten in 15 matches against Norwich City (W10 D5), including avoiding defeat in their last seven trips to Carrow Road (W4 D3).
- Chelsea have lost just two of their last 22 Premier League games versus newly promoted teams (W15 D5 L2), although both defeats came against reigning Championship champions (0-3 vs Newcastle in 2017-18 and 1-2 vs Wolves in 2018-19).
- Norwich City have won just once in their last 15 Premier League home games against ‘big six’ opposition, picking up just seven points from a possible 45 in this run (W1 D4 L10).
- Norwich are looking to win three consecutive Premier League home games for the first time since December 2012 (a run of 5).
- Chelsea have gone four Premier League away matches without a win (W0 D2 L2), failing to score in three of those games. The Blues last endured a longer away winless streak during a seven-game run between September and December 2015 under Jose Mourinho (6 games) and Guus Hiddink (1 game).
- Chelsea haven’t failed to win their opening three games to a Premier League season since 1998-99 under Gianluca Vialli. However, the Blues went on to finish third in that campaign, qualifying for the Champions League for the first time.
- Norwich’s Teemu Pukki could become the 10th player to score in each of his first three Premier League appearances. He’s netted four goals in his two games so far – only Pavel Pogrebnyak scored as many as five goals in his first three games in the competition.
- Only Harry Wilson (24) has been directly involved in more goals in all competitions under Frank Lampard as a manager than Chelsea’s Mason Mount (17 – 12 goals, 5 assists).
- Frank Lampard is looking to avoid becoming the first Chelsea manager since Bobby Campbell in 1988 to fail to win any of his first four games in charge of the club in all competitions.
BRIGHTON V SOUTHAMPTON
3pm Brighton will be delighted with their start to the season. Four points from two games and their 3-0 win away from home against Watford was very impressive. They finished last season terribly so to start well will be a big boost for the club. Southampton have lost their two games, however one of those came against Liverpool. They would have been bitterly disappointed to lose 3-0 against Burnley though, and it looks like they’ll be battling for survival again this season; but ultimately stay up. Brighton have a very poor record against Southampton, winning only once in the last ten meetings between the sides. However, we have been very impressed by Brighton in what they’ve displayed in the opening two games and they look good value at 2.48 to beat this Southampton side.
BETDAQ BEST BET:
Brighton to beat Southampton at 2.48.

MATCH STATS
- Brighton have won only one of their last 10 matches with Southampton in all competitions (W1 D5 L4), winning 3-0 at the Amex in the Championship in January 2012.
- Southampton are unbeaten in their last seven top-flight meetings with Brighton since a 0-2 defeat at the Goldstone Ground in December 1981 (W2 D5).
- In all competitions, Southampton have lost just one of their last 11 away games against Brighton (W7 D3), going down 0-3 in the Championship in January 2012.
- Brighton, who have picked up four points from six in 2019-20, have never opened a top-flight campaign by remaining unbeaten in their opening three games.
- Southampton are winless in their last seven Premier League matches (W0 D3 L4), since a 3-1 victory against Wolves in April. Indeed, Ralph Hasenhüttl last went eight league games without a win back in March 2013 with VfR Aalen in the German second tier.
- Brighton haven’t scored more than once in any of their last 13 Premier League home games, netting just eight goals in the process.
- Southampton will be looking to avoid opening a Premier League campaign with three defeats for the first time since 2012-13 under Nigel Adkins. On the five previous occasions they lost their first three PL games they still managed to avoid relegation.
- Two of Brighton’s four Premier League goals so far this season have been netted by substitutes – they only scored three goals via subs in the whole of 2018-19.
- Glenn Murray has scored in three of his four Premier League appearances for Brighton against Southampton (3 goals), with two of those strikes coming via the penalty spot.
- Brighton boss Graham Potter will become the sixth person to manage a Premier League game against Southampton having previously played for Saints in the competition (also Micky Adams, Iain Dowie, Mark Hughes, Garry Monk and Peter Reid).
MANCHESTER UNITED V CRYSTAL PALACE
3pm It’s been a very poor start to the season for Crystal Palace, and now they have to come to Old Trafford. Perhaps it’s a good thing though; they won’t be expected to get any points here and you just never know these days with United. United should be two from two only for a missed penalty on Monday night by Pogba, and they have an excellent long-term record against Palace. They are unbeaten in the last 22 Premier League meetings between the sides! United blew Chelsea away here in the opening fixture and with morale low at Palace, we can see the same thing happening here. Any Other Home Win (United to score four or more) is trading 5.8 at the time of writing and that looks massive. United might not be the force of old, but they are playing more freely under Ole and we should see plenty of goals at Old Trafford this season.
BETDAQ BEST BET:
Any Other Home Win at 5.8.

MATCH STATS
- Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 22 league games against Crystal Palace (W18 D4) since a 0-3 defeat at Selhurst Park in May 1991.
- Crystal Palace are winless in their last 12 away league visits to Old Trafford to face Man Utd (D1 L11) since a 2-1 victory in December 1989 courtesy of a brace from Mark Bright. Indeed, the Eagles have failed to score in 11 of those 12 away league games.
- Crystal Palace have never beaten Man Utd in their 20 Premier League meetings (D4 L16); the most a team has faced another without ever winning in the competition.
- Crystal Palace have won just two of their last 20 Premier League games against ‘big six’ opposition (W2 D3 L15), although those two victories came away from home, beating Man City in December 2018 and Arsenal in April 2019.
- London sides have won just 16 of their 152 Premier League games at Old Trafford, the lowest win rate for clubs from the capital at an away ground in the competition (11%).
- Manchester United have lost two of their last four Premier League home games (W1 D1), though they did win last time out against Chelsea. Those two defeats are as many as they lost in their previous 27 at Old Trafford in the Premier League (W18 D7 L2).
- Crystal Palace have failed to score in their opening two Premier League fixtures for the third time in the last four seasons (also two in 2016-17 and seven in 2017-18).
- Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson has lost seven of his eight Premier League visits to Old Trafford, with his sides scoring four goals and conceding 22. The only exception was a 0-0 draw in this exact fixture last season.
- Manchester United’s Paul Pogba has missed four Premier League penalties since the start of last season, more than any other player in the competition. In that time, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial have all taken and scored their Premier League penalties for the Red Devils.
- Anthony Martial has scored in both of Manchester United’s opening two Premier League games this season – only Dwight Yorke in 1999-00, Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2005-06 and Wayne Rooney in 2011-12 have scored in the Red Devils’ opening three of a campaign in the competition.
SHEFFIELD UNITED V LEICESTER
3pm Sheffield United notched up their first win last weekend against Crystal Palace, and they will be absolutely delighted with four points from two games. They started favourite to go down at the start of the season, but it looks like they have more chance of staying up than the markets are giving them credit for. Leicester will feel slightly disappointed not to have beaten Chelsea last weekend, they were the better team but they find themselves with two draws from two games and while they will fancy their chances of collecting all three points here – they look too short at 2.36. We expect this to be a very tight affair as nether team has seen a game with over 2.5 goals this season – under 2.5 goals is trading 1.71 at the time of writing and while that is a very tempting bet, we’re happy to go with the Leicester lay at 2.36 which looks at least ten ticks too short.
BETDAQ BEST BET:
Lay Leicester at 2.36.

MATCH STATS
- This will be the first Premier League meeting between Sheffield United and Leicester City, with their last top-flight match coming back in February 1976, a 1-1 draw at Filbert Street.
- Leicester City will be looking to record consecutive league victories against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane for the first time since March 1965 under Matt Gillies.
- Sheffield United have failed to win any of their last six competitive matches against Leicester City (D2 L4), losing each of the last three – their longest losing streak against the Foxes.
- Sheffield United have only remained unbeaten through their first three games in one of their last 30 top-flight campaigns, doing so in 1971-72 when they were also a newly-promoted side.
- Sheffield United have won six of their last 10 Premier League home games (D2 L2), netting at least once in each of those 10 games.
- Leicester have drawn their last three Premier League games. They last drew four in a row in league competition in November 2004 (a run of six), while they last had a longer such run in the top-flight in April 1977 (four games).
- Sheffield United have named an all British/Irish starting XI in their two Premier League games so far. The last side to do so in three consecutive Premier League matches were Norwich City in April 2012, while the last to do so in their opening three games of a season were Wolves in 2011-12.
- Since scoring in the 86th and 90th minutes against Arsenal in April, Leicester striker Jamie Vardy has attempted just three shots in his last 360 minutes of Premier League football, with only one of those attempts on target (0 goals).
- Against Crystal Palace, Phil Jagielka made his first appearance for Sheffield United in the Premier League since May 2007, a gap of 4,480 days – he became the club’s oldest Premier League player (37 years and 1 day), with Chris Kamara the previous oldest (36y 78d in March 1994).
- Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers has lost three of his four matches against Sheffield United as manager (W1 L3), with each defeat coming with a different side (Watford in 2009, Reading in 2009 and Swansea in 2010).
WATFORD V WEST HAM
3pm With two losses from their opening two games, Watford need a boost. They were played off the park in the season opener here against Brighton and then lost 1-0 away from home against Everton last weekend. They should be beating sides like West Ham while having home advantage; so it will be very interesting to see how this game goes. We all know how trigger happy clubs are with managers these days. West Ham were lucky to get a point away from home against Brighton last weekend after being tonked 5-0 against City on the opening weekend. On Balance Watford should win this game, but they look horribly short at 2.2 – West Ham have a very good record when coming here too; only losing twice in the last 15 Premier League visits. We expect a close game here, and from a value point of view we’re happy to lay Watford at 2.2.
BETDAQ BEST BET:
Lay Watford at 2.2.

MATCH STATS
- Watford have won more Premier League matches versus West Ham than they have against any other side in the competition (5).
- West Ham have lost just two of their last 15 away league games versus Watford (W9 D4 L2), winning 4-1 at Vicarage Road on the final day last term. The Hammers last won consecutive away league games against Watford back in March 2000.
- Watford have lost their last five Premier League games – they haven’t lost six in a row since losing their final six games of the 2016-17 campaign.
- Watford’s last two Premier League home games has seen them lose 1-4 (vs West Ham) and 0-3 (vs Brighton). Only three sides have lost three consecutive home games in the competition by a margin of 3+ goals – Bradford in 2000-01, Derby in 2007-08 and Swansea in 2016-17.
- West Ham are winless in their last nine Premier League games in August, with eight defeats followed by last week’s draw with Brighton. Indeed, in Premier League history only Southampton (40) have lost more games in the month than the Hammers (38).
- Watford have failed to score in their two Premier League games so far this season. They last failed to score in their opening three league games in a campaign back in 2003-04 in the second tier.
- Since beating Everton 1-0 in February, Watford have conceded in each of their last 14 Premier League games, shipping 29 goals in total. They last had a longer run without a clean sheet in league competition between September 1999-March 2000 (20 games).
- West Ham’s Michail Antonio has scored more league goals against Watford than he has against any other side in his career (6).
- Mark Noble has scored four goals against Watford for West Ham, including netting twice in this fixture last season – against no side has he bagged more Premier League goals (level with Southampton).
- Watford’s Gerard Deulofeu scored home and away against West Ham in the Premier League last season, one of just four players to do so (also Callum Wilson, Chris Wood and Sadio Mane).
LIVERPOOL V ARSENAL
5.30pm This fixture is undoubtedly the highlight of the weekend and we should get a very good guide as to where Arsenal stand this season. Liverpool have started the season strongly and they were ultra-impressive last year. Arsenal still have all those question marks of their away form and Anfield has been a fortress for Liverpool. This is usually an absolutely cracking fixture with plenty of goals; will we see the same this evening?
The match odds at the time of writing currently trade; Liverpool 1.53, Arsenal 6.6 and the draw is 5.0. It’s a sign of the history of this fixture that over 2.5 goals is trading as short as 1.47 at the time of writing! We would much prefer the back Liverpool at the slightly bigger price than over 2.5 goals. Even Both Teams To Score offers more value at 1.6. Liverpool have beaten Arsenal the last three times here and scored a host of goals too so we can’t see past yet another home win for Klopp’s men.
BETDAQ BEST BET:
Liverpool to beat Arsenal at 1.53.

- Liverpool have won 11 consecutive Premier League matches, equalling their best-ever winning streak in the competition, previously set between February and April 2014 under Brendan Rodgers. Victory against Arsenal would see Liverpool equal their longest winning run in league competition (12 between April-October 1990 under Kenny Dalglish).
