PREMIER LEAGUE SUNDAY: We preview Sunday’s two Premier League games between ARSENAL v SOUTHAMPTON and MAN U v LIVERPOOL both kicking off at 2.05pm both with recommended BETDAQ bets and extended stats.

ARSENAL V SOUTHAMPTON

2.05pm We have an excellent day of football ahead and we start our Premier League preview with Arsenal taking on Southampton. The hosts came through their Europa League clash on Thursday night easily after losing the first leg 1-0 away from home, and you’d expect this to be a tough afternoon for Southampton. The Gunners are unbeaten in their last 12 home Premier League games and have won their last six in a row – not the kind of stats you’d want to hear as a Southampton fan sitting in 18th position in the table.

Arsenal are odds on favourites with the match odds at the time of writing currently trading; Arsenal 1.54, Southampton 7.0 and the draw is 4.7. Arsenal haven’t been as strong lately as they were just after the start of the season and away from home there are some bad old habits creeping back in. They’ve always been strong at home though, and it’s hard to see Southampton actually beating them – a draw seems to be their best hope. Losing last time out to Cardiff would have been a massive blow and we can’t see past an Arsenal win here to start the day – the 1.54 looks just about big enough to back.

BETDAQ BEST BET:
Arsenal to beat Southampton at 1.54.

MATCH STATS

  • Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 23 home league games against Southampton (W17 D6) since a 0-1 loss in November 1987.
  • Southampton have won none of their 19 away Premier League games against Arsenal (D5 L14) – the most a team has played away at another without ever winning in the competition.
  • Having won the reverse fixture, Southampton are looking to complete their first league double over Arsenal since the 1987-88 campaign, when a 17-year-old Alan Shearer netted a hat-trick on his first league start for Saints.
  • Arsenal are unbeaten in 12 Premier League home games (W10 D2), winning the last six in a row. Against sides starting the day in the relegation zone, the Gunners have won their last 30 at the Emirates since a 4-4 draw with Tottenham in October 2008.
  • Southampton are unbeaten in their last four Premier League away games (W2 D2). They last had a longer run without defeat on the road between August-November 2015 (W2 D4).
  • Arsenal have conceded 999 Premier League goals and could become the eighth team to concede 1000 in the competition.
  • Southampton have dropped a league-high 17 points from winning positions in the Premier League this season, while only Leicester (13) have won more from behind than Arsenal (12).
  • Southampton striker Charlie Austin has scored in all five of his Premier League games against Arsenal. Only Raheem Sterling (6 vs Bournemouth) has a better 100% record of scoring in every game against an opponent in the competition.
  • No player has scored more winning goals in the Premier League this season than Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette – eight of the Frenchman’s 10 Premier League goals have been the winning goal of the game.
  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has had a hand in nine goals in his last six Premier League games at the Emirates for Arsenal (6 goals, 3 assists).

MANCHESTER UNITED V LIVERPOOL

2.05pm What a massive game. For various reasons, it’s hard to think of a game that would have mattered more in the last few years between these old bitter rivals. Ole Gunner Solskjaer has brought back the “buzz” to Old Trafford and he will understand just how important it would be to Manchester United fans to dent Liverpool’s title hopes. While a win here for Liverpool would be a huge boost to their title hopes and steady the ship after poor draws against Leicester and West Ham recently.

Liverpool are favourites with the match odds at the time of writing currently trading; Manchester United 3.2, Liverpool 2.4 and the draw is 3.6. If Liverpool turn up to Old Trafford and play the same way they did against Leicester and West Ham, there is no doubt that United will win; they also created very little against Bayern in the Champions League midweek which would have to be a worry. United have been in absolutely superb form since Solskjaer took over, with a 2-0 loss to PSG being the only blip – we just can’t have the Liverpool price here at 2.4 – it looks massively short. The way both teams are playing at the moment; we see this as a real 50/50 game and the value call is the Liverpool lay at 2.4.

BETDAQ BEST BET:
Lay Liverpool at 2.4.

MATCH STATS

  • Manchester United have won seven of their last nine home league games against Liverpool, losing 0-3 in March 2014 and drawing 1-1 in January 2017.
  • Liverpool won the reverse fixture 3-1 and are looking to do the league double over Manchester United for the first time since 2013-14. They’re already the side to do the Premier League double over the Red Devils more than any other in the competition (4).
  • Only Manchester City and Chelsea (6 each) have won more Premier League away games against Manchester United than Liverpool (5).
  • This will be the first time Manchester United have hosted Liverpool in a league game with the Reds as high as second in the table since October 1996 – Man Utd won 1-0 thanks to a David Beckham strike.
  • Manchester United are on the longest current unbeaten run in the Premier League (W8 D1), and their longest run without defeat in the competition since October 2017 (10 games).
  • Manchester United have kept just one clean sheet in their 12 Premier League games at Old Trafford this season, only Fulham have kept as few in home games (1). Meanwhile, Liverpool are one of three sides to have scored in every away league game coming into this round of matches (along with Spurs and Man Utd).
  • Liverpool have lost just one of their last 13 Premier League away games (W9 D3). However, against sides starting the day in the top four, they’re winless in their last seven away from home since beating Chelsea 2-1 in September 2016.
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has won 25 points in his nine Premier League games as Man Utd manager. Victory or a draw in this match would see him set a new record points total for a manager in their first 10 games in charge of a Premier League side (currently 25 by Guus Hiddink at Chelsea).
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be the 20 th different Manchester United manager to take charge of a league match against Liverpool. Nine of the previous 19 have won their first such encounter, most recently Louis van Gaal in December 2014.
  • Manchester United are the only side that Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has faced more than once in the Premier League but not scored or assisted a single goal against (3 games).
  • Sadio Mane and Xherdan Shaqiri scored Liverpool’s goals in the reverse fixture against Manchester United. The last Liverpool player to score home and away against the Red Devils in the same Premier League season was Fernando Torres in 2009-10.
  • Manchester United keeper David De Gea has kept 99 clean sheets in the Premier League. He could become the 15 th different keeper to record 100 shutouts in the competition, and just the seventh to do so with a single club.
  • Mohamed Salah has scored 49 Premier League goals for Liverpool. If he scores in this game, he’d have reached his 50 in just 63 games, making him the fastest player to reach the milestone for a single club.
  • Paul Pogba has scored eight goals and assisted a further five in his last nine Premier League games, with Newcastle being the only game he’s not scored or assisted in that run.
