PREMIER LEAGUE SUNDAY: We preview Sunday’s four Premier League matches with recommended BETDAQ bets and extended match stats.
ASTON VILLA V LEICESTER
2pm We have a busy Sunday of action in the Premier League with four games and we start with Aston Villa hosting Leicester. Brendan Rodgers gave the club a boost on Friday when signing a five and a half year deal, and that puts an end to the links with Arsenal – although who would want the Arsenal job at the moment! Leicester have been absolutely fantastic this season and continued their winning run during the week while Villa lost to Chelsea.
The match odds at the time of writing currently trade; Aston Villa 4.5, Leicester 1.86 and the draw is 4.0. With the way that Leicester are playing this season, they look cracking value at 1.86. Indeed they look like the bet of the day at those odds. Villa have been grinding out some results but they sat down in 16th position at the start of the weekends fixtures and with Leicester full of confidence and scoring goals, they can add another three points here.
BETDAQ BEST BET:
Leicester to beat Aston Villa at 1.86.

MATCH STATS
- Aston Villa have lost just one of their last eight home league games against Leicester (W3 D4), going down 0-2 in December 2001.
- This is the first meeting between Aston Villa and Leicester since January 2016, and a 1-1 draw at Villa Park in the Premier League. Leicester are unbeaten in three league games against the Villans (W2 D1), having lost each of the three before that.
- Aston Villa have won two of their last three home Premier League games (L1), more than they had in their previous 11 in the competition (W1 D3 L7). They’re looking for back-to-back top-flight wins at Villa Park for the first time since May 2015.
- Leicester have won their last three away league games by an aggregate score of 13-0. Only between October-December of their 2015-16 title winning season have they won four consecutive away games in the Premier League.
- Aston Villa haven’t won any of their last 12 Premier League matches played on Sundays (D3 L9), since beating Leicester 2-1 on 7th December 2014.
- Leicester have won their last seven Premier League matches – a win against Aston Villa will achieve their longest ever winning run in the top-flight. The Foxes have only won eight consecutive league games once previously, winning nine in a row between December 2013 and February 2014 in the Championship.
- Aston Villa’s Trézéguet has scored in each of his last three Premier League starts – the last player to score in four in a row for the club in the top-flight was Christian Benteke in April 2013.
- Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers has won all four of his Premier League away games against Aston Villa at Villa Park – only three managers have a higher 100% win rate away at a specific ground in the competition: Arsène Wenger at KCOM Stadium, Gerry Francis at Highfield Road and Jürgen Klopp at Selhurst Park (all 5/5).
- Leicester striker Jamie Vardy has scored in his last seven Premier League appearances – the last player to score in eight in a row was Vardy himself, during his record 11-game run between August and November 2015.
- Including play-offs, Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish has been directly involved in 11 goals in his last 14 league appearances at Villa Park (4 goals, 7 assists), registering an assist in each of his last two home appearances.
NEWCASTLE V SOUTHAMPTON
2pm Both these sides had good wins during the week, and this should be a good game. It’s been an excellent couple of days for Southampton who managed to beat Watford and Norwich – they climbed out of the bottom three heading into this weekend’s fixtures and will be hoping to stay out! They have a poor record when travelling to Newcastle in the Premier League though, and apart from the blip against Aston Villa, Newcastle have been playing some good football recently.
The match odds at the time of writing currently trade; Newcastle 2.66, Southampton 3.05 and the draw is 3.35. Southampton may have won two massive games at the bottom of the table, but they had home advantage both times. Newcastle have won 10 of the last 14 Premier League meetings between the sides here and with them trading at 2.66 today, we think that’s too big. We expect Newcastle to be around 2.5 to win, so we’re very happy with 2.66.
BETDAQ BEST BET:
Newcastle to beat Southampton at 2.66.

MATCH STATS
- Newcastle have lost just one of their last 14 Premier League home games against Southampton (W10 D3), 1-2 in January 2015. Only against Aston Villa (14) and Everton (13) have they won more at St James’ Park than vs Southampton in the competition (12).
- Southampton have lost two of their last three Premier League games against Newcastle (D1), having been unbeaten against them in the previous seven (W4 D3).
- Newcastle haven’t failed to score in any of their last 14 home Premier League games against Southampton since a 0-1 loss in March 1997 – it’s their longest ever such scoring streak against an opponent in the competition.
- Newcastle are unbeaten in their last six Premier League home games (W2 D4) since losing against Arsenal on the opening weekend. No Premier League ground has seen fewer goals this season than St. James’ Park (13 – level with Selhurst Park).
- Southampton are winless in their last four Premier League away games (D2 L2), having won their previous two before that.
- Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has lost his last four Premier League matches against Southampton, all during his time at Hull City in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 campaigns.
- Six of the last seven Premier League goals Southampton have scored have been via set pieces (four free-kicks and two corners), including both in their 2-1 win over Norwich on Wednesday.
- Newcastle haven’t won a home Premier League game in December since 2015 against Liverpool, and are winless in nine games at St James’ Park since (D3 L6).
- Danny Ings has scored in his last four Premier League appearances for Southampton – only two Saints players have scored in five in a row, with James Beattie doing so twice (2002 & 2003) and Matt Le Tissier also achieving it twice (1994 & 1996).
- Each of Southampton’s last 12 Premier League goals have been scored by Englishmen – excluding own-goals, the last team to have a longer run were the Saints themselves between March and August 2014 (13 in a row).
NORWICH V SHEFFIELD UNITED
2pm Sheffield United have been absolutely excellent in the Premier League this season and surprised many, however they did suffer a setback when losing 2-0 to Newcastle during the week. They have a good chance to get back to winning ways here against Norwich who lost to Southampton midweek. Norwich must be starting to feel the pressure with only Watford below them in the table, they always seems to be a few losses away from being cast adrift, yet they somehow manage to stay in touch!
The match odds at the time of writing currently trade; Norwich 3.2, Sheffield United 2.44 and the draw is 3.55. Prior to losing against Newcastle during the week, Sheffield United had managed to draw with Wolves, Manchester United and Spurs. They have been pretty solid and deserve to sit in the top half of the table. Norwich may have drawn with Arsenal here last weekend but Arsenal are playing poorly at the moment and we feel that the 2.44 on Sheffield United is too big to ignore. They can get back to winning ways here.
BETDAQ BEST BET:
Sheffield United to beat Norwich at 2.44.

MATCH STATS
- Norwich have won three of their four Premier League meetings with Sheffield United (L1), though this is the first such meeting since April 1994 when the Blades won 1-0 at Carrow Road.
- Sheffield United are unbeaten in their last two away league games against Norwich (W1 D1), having lost five in a row before that. They came from behind twice to draw 2-2 in this fixture in the Championship last season.
- The away side has won the last three Premier League meetings between Norwich and Sheffield United (two wins for Norwich, one for Sheffield United).
- Norwich haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last 11 Premier League home games, conceding at least twice in each of the last six (W1 D1 L4). The last team to concede 2+ goals in seven consecutive Premier League home games was Wolves (11 between December 2011-April 2012).
- Sheffield United are still unbeaten away from home in the Premier League this season, though six of their seven games have ended level (W1). The last time the Blades remained unbeaten in their opening eight away games of a season was in League One in 2012-13, while the last time they did so in the top-flight was in 1899-00 (first 10).
- Norwich striker Teemu Pukki has been involved in 11 goals in his first 15 Premier League appearances (8 goals, 3 assists), the best return by a player for a newly-promoted club since 2015-16, when Odion Ighalo was also involved in 11 in his first 15 games for Watford.
- Sheffield United have avoided defeat in all seven Premier League away games this season (W1 D6) – they only avoided defeat in five of their 19 away games in their last Premier League season in 2006-07 (W3 D2 L14).
- Daniel Farke is yet to see Norwich keep a clean sheet in his seven home Premier League games – the last manager to have a longer run without a clean sheet from his first home match in the competition was Mike Phelan in 2016-17 with Hull City (10 games).
- Teemu Pukki has scored 33% of Norwich’s home league goals since the start of last season (21/63), with no other player scoring more than six for the club at Carrow Road in that time.
o Lys Mousset has scored three of Sheffield United’ last four away goals in the Premier League.
BRIGHTON V WOLVES
4.30pm We end the day with Brighton hosting Wolves in what should be a very good game. Brighton put more misery on Arsenal’s current situation with a 2-1 win away from home during the week and before that they nearly got a result away to Liverpool. They must be feeling full of confidence and although Wolves are playing good football this season, we expect a close game here. It’s not a surprise to see such an open market.
The match odds at the time of writing currently trade; Brighton 2.78, Wolves 2.94 and the draw is 3.25. Wolves have been grinding out some impressive results after they had a slow start to the season. They must have realistic hopes of a top six finish now given how poor Manchester United, Spurs and Arsenal have been. While Brighton have been playing good football, we feel Wolves should be a little shorter here than 2.94 and from a value point of view, we have to back the away side.
BETDAQ BEST BET:
Wolves to beat Brighton at 2.94.

- Wolves are unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League matches (W5 D5); the second-longest current run in the competition, only behind Liverpool’s 32-match run.
