Premier League Target June 12 Return The Premier League met via conference call on Friday the 1st of May and remain committed to finishing the season. However, they did stress that this would only be possible with “government guidance and under expert medical advice.”
UFEA have slightly put the pressure on as they have asked for details for a plan on how to finish the season by May 25th. This has meant that leagues in the Netherlands and France have been voided, with no Champion in the Netherlands but PSG getting awarded the French title.
The Premier League has put together ‘Project Restart’ and aims to finish the season behind closed doors at neutral venues. They say it’s unreasonable to expect to play at 20 stadiums, but it remains to be seen where these neutral venues are. June 12 has been given as the target date, however as we seen in Germany – these dates can move quickly.
A Premier League statement read: “At a meeting of Premier League Shareholders today, clubs discussed possible steps towards planning to resume the 2019/20 season, when it is safe and appropriate to do so.
“It was reiterated that the thoughts of all are with those directly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Furthermore, the Premier League’s priority is the health and safety of players, coaches, managers, club staff, supporters and the wider community.
“The League and clubs are considering the first tentative moves forward and will only return to training and playing with Government guidance, under expert medical advice and after consultation with players and managers.
“The League welcomed the creation of the Government medical working group for a return of elite sport, which met for the first time this morning.
“No decisions were taken at today’s Shareholders’ meeting and clubs exchanged views on the information provided regarding Project Restart. It was agreed that the PFA, LMA, players and managers are key to this process and will be further consulted.
“The clubs reconfirmed their commitment to finishing the 2019/20 season, maintaining integrity of the competition and welcomed the Government’s support.”
The next step is for another conference call between clubs on Friday the 8th of May and perhaps we will see a plan in place after that meeting. The news that clubs are committed to finishing the season is good news for Liverpool fans, but many issues are still to overcome.
