PURPLE PATCH: How Karim Benzema has written himself into Real Madrid folklore.

Real Madrid have comfortably won La Liga for the second time in three seasons and have secured their place in yet another Champions League final. It might sound like a broken record at this point but their success this year wouldn’t have been nearly as straightforward if it wasn’t for one magnificent striker.

Karim Benzema has had arguably the best season of his illustrious career. Despite turning 34 in December, in the 45 appearances that the French number nine has made in all competitions, he has scored a mind boggling 44 goals and registered 15 assists. Only Robert Lewandowski comes close to his record in 2021/22.

Benzema broke a Champions League record this season when scoring seven goals against English clubs in the competition and registered stunning back-to-back hat-tricks against Chelsea and PSG. Without them, La Casa Blanca would have surely been dumped out of the competition.

Benzema is well in the lead to be awarded the 2022 Ballon d’Or and still has a Champions League Final to look forward to. If his astonishing stats this season aren’t enough to inspire, take a look at the Panenka he scored against Manchester City to secure Real Madrid’s spot in the season’s biggest match in European club football.
