PURPLE PATCH: Son Heung-Min has enjoyed a fantastic start to his season in front of goal and is the in-form man in the Premier League, so we decided to take a closer look at his recent performances.
How the South Korean has come of age this season
Although Harry Kane has been Tottenham’s leading light for a number of seasons, Son Heung-min’s unbelievable start to the season has meant the weight has been somewhat lifted off the Englishman’s shoulders.
The South Korean has enjoyed a stellar campaign so far with 10 goals and four assists in his nine appearances for the north London club.
His eight goals in six games is the joint second-most alongside Sergio Aguero (2019-20) and Diego Costa (2014-15) after the opening six matches of a Premier League season, with Micky Quinn’s 10 in the 1992-93 campaign the only time someone has scored more.
The 28-year-old drew a blank his first two appearances against Everton and Lokomotiv Plovdiv, but was back to his best with a sterling performance away to Southampton where he netted four times in an emphatic 5-2 win.
He was again on the scoresheet against Shkendija Tetovo in Europa League qualifying, before being subbed off at half-time against Newcastle with what appeared to be a fairly serious thigh injury, much to the dismay of the Spurs fans.
That thigh problem kept him out of the game against Maccabi Haifa, but since then Spurs’ number seven has been in irresistible form.
He’s scored five times in four matches, including two against top-six rivals Manchester United, as well as setting up four goals for his teammates.
The most recent of those came on Monday as his header gave Tottenham a 1-0 win over Burnley putting Jose Mourinho’s side fifth in the table and just two points off leaders Everton.
Some have said Spurs could be title contenders, well if Son can continue his Purple Patch, those dreams could easily turn to reality.
