The draw for the 2014 Dubai World Cup took place at Meydan this afternoon with Investec Derby Winner, Ruler of the World, being drawn to start from stall 12 in the World’s richest race on Saturday, the same berth where Animal Kingdom broke from 12 months ago before winning the race.
There was much talk prior to the draw as it was revealed that the O’Brien star had been part purchased by Sheikh Joaan Al Thani of the Al Shaqab Racing team, who will hold 50% ownership of the colt. Although the favourite for the race will carry the colours of Al Shaqab Racing, a deal was done to ensure that Joseph O’Brien will keep the ride while retained rider, Frankie Dettori, will step in when necessary.
Harry Herbert, racing advisor to Al Shaqab, said; ‘’ Al Shaqab is delighted to be in partnership with John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith and we are extremely excited to be participating in Saturday’s World Cup.
“It’s tremendously exciting and the Sheikh is thrilled.
“It’s been a very recent development, just over the last two or three days, and Al Shaqab has 50 per cent.
“But he’ll remain with Aidan O’Brien and will be ridden by Joseph O’Brien, Coolmore were keen for that to be the case.
“When he retires, Al Shaqab will also receive 50 per cent of his stud value.
“He is a horse that Sheikh Joaan has always liked and pinpointed him as a horse he’d like to be involved with, especially with this weekend in mind. It’s great to be involved in races like this.
“Whatever happens on Saturday, it is a long season and he’ll be a great addition.
“Hopefully it is the start of a great partnership as Al Shaqab also has a share in a Galileo two-year-old with Coolmore.’’
The globetrotting, Red Cadeaux, will once again represent Ed Dunlop having finished second in the race last year before going on to finish third in the Melbourne Cup and he will be breaking from stall 14. Fellow English raider, Mukhadram will also be starting from wide out on the course in 13 with Ron The Greek, widest of all in stall 16.
Another of the well fancied runners, Military Attack, who will be representing Hong Kong, will come from stall eight with another Hong Kong runner Akeed Mofeed in stall four.
The $10,000,000 contest, is the world’s richest race and see’s runners coming from no less than seven countries worldwide for the World Cup.
There is likely to be approximately 16 runners on the night from Ireland while there will be no less than 20 UK based runners.
