IRISH GREYHOUND DERBY: What a Derby this is turning out to be so far! We had Sonic and Clares Rocket nearly break the track record last Thursday and last night we had a 33/1 winner Lolos Framptons. I wonder what Saturday night will throw at us, I can’t wait.
There was a decent crowd in HQ last night for the first batch of eight heats in round 2 of the Derby. The restaurant was packed with bus loads of people, it was great to see a few of them venture down to the bookies to have a flutter, that’s what it’s all about, attracting a new audience. I had a day off yesterday so I had time to study the form and not in a month of Sundays would I have picked Lolos Framptons. He came out of the traps like a scalded cat and made all in 29.70 at a huge price of 33/1 but was available at 50/1 at one stage. You learn something new everyday but in hindsight he couldn’t really be written off and Ronnie Craven does have some really good dogs. I wish him all the best in the Derby, if he keeps running like that you never know how far he will get.
The highlight of the night for me though was the super fast, consistent and ever so easy on the eye, SONIC. He was sublime last night. He missed the kick and was only fourth going into the first bend and was brought out wide after a bit of argy-bargy. Down the back straight it was obvious he had a bit of work to do but would definitely qualify. All was not lost though, he came around the last bend and was a dog on a mission, he went wide and got up on the line to win by a head in 29.62. He was savage and I think he will make it to the final. I think one dog to watch out for is Gerry Holian’s Typical Ash, ran really well last night, that’s two heats he has won now and Gerry is a brilliant man with a dog. Burnt Beans also impressed me last night after winning in 29.56 and Ian Reilly’s dogs are running out of their skin at the moment, more luck to you Ian, be nice to see Meath actually win something this year!!
Yvonne Barry is a woman who knows her dogs, she is a brilliant judge and one of the leading bookies in the ring. Yvonne thinks Good News will make it to the final.
Tomorrow night we can look forward to Clares Rocket (pictured), Clonbrien Hero, Tyrur Harold, Jaytee Jet, Whoops Jack and Jaytee Yankee to mention a few. Check out the Irish Daily Star newspaper tomorrow for my tips and I hope to make some more money for my followers. I also think Mayo will beat Kerry this weekend. Mayo to be leading at half time and win the match is a decent price and worth a flutter.
I must not forget to mention my little superstar Brewers Sarah, she is running in a final on Tuesday night, she got trap 3 and has a chance if she comes away. This little bitch has brought us so much joy at home. I bought her off Gerry Merriman and my Mam and Dad do a brilliant job with the dogs at home, she might not be the fastest bitch and she will never win a Derby but she is the best in my eyes.
See you all tomorrow night.
Sarah
