THURLES THURSDAY TREAT: All eyes will be on Don Cossack in Thursday’s Ladbrokes Ireland Kinloch Brae Chase at Thurles.
No Irish racing until Thurles on Thursday but fingers crossed the weather doesn’t have it’s say and we get the chance to see Don Cossack in the featured Ladbrokes Ireland Kinloch Brae Chase en route to the Cheltenham Gold Cup, for which he is currently quoted at 5/1 second favourite with the sponsors behind Djakadam the 10/3 market leader.
DAQMAN identifies the Kinloch Brae as a key Cheltenham trial race in his preview today and Don Cossack will start at prohibitive odds in his attempt to repeat last season’s success when he was left clear at the last after Champagne Fever fell.
Don Cossack, of course, made his own jumping clanger last time out when falling in the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day. He was very much getting into contention before falling at the second last and opinion is still split as to whether he was the moral winner of the race. It’s such a shame as we could have been set for an even more dramatic finish – not that it wasn’t high octane enough with Cue Card and Vautour fighting out a terrific battle.
Trainer Gordon Elliott told the Racing Post: “He’s schooled well at home since Kempton and I’ve been very happy with him. Hopefully, everything will go according to plan on Thursday and then it’ll be all systems go for the Gold Cup.”
12 five-day entries were made for the race.
