BOXING DAY CHAMPAGNE ON ICE: SHAMROCK looks back at the Clonmel Oil Chase which saw Champagne Fever bounce back to winning form. His best bet of the day runs at Dundalk tonight.
On a weekend when many of our jumping stars are in action Champagne Fever got to the front of queue to book his place at the King George at Kempton on Boxing Day with an impressive success in the Clonmel Oil Chase.
Despite pre-race pessimism from trainer Willie Mullins as to the fitness of the grey – he impressed in winning under Paul Townend who stood in for Ruby Walsh.
Mullins is now leaning to go straight to Kempton, although the John Durkan at Punchestown is still an interim possibility.
Champagne Fever is trading around 7 on the BETDAQ ante-post market in the King George.
Principal market rival Sizing Europe proved a big disappointment yesterday. He never really looking like getting competitive and trailed in sixth of the seven runners.
Trainer Henry de Bromhead said: “My immediate reaction is (to blame the) ground. I’m not into making rash decisions, but I imagine it was ground today (that may have beaten him).”

At Dundalk tonight Great Dancer looks vulnerable in the maiden at 7.15. Although he was a course and distance second last time out – the form of that race hasn’t worked out and he might be at the mercy of a lighter raced improver.
The answer might be Solomon Northup who shaped with promise on debut at Leopardstown and then predictably found things tough in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes at the Curragh for which he went off a 100/1 chance.
You would think that even if he turns out to be only half the horse they thought he was – this surely should be within his grasp.
