COSSACK FAR FROM IMPRESSIVE: SHAMROCK looks back at Don Cossack’s win in the Ladbrokes Ireland Kinloch Brae Chase at Thurles yesterday and has a nap at Dundalk this evening.

Don Cossack repeated his success of last year in the Ladbrokes Ireland Kinloch Brae Chase at Thurles, winning by nine and a half lengths, but that only really tells half the story.

The 1/8 favourite had to work much harder than his odds suggested and overall it was fairly laboured effort which has seen his odds drift on BETDAQ for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He is currently trading at around 6 on the BETDAQ ante-post market.

On the plus side it was a confidence booster after his Kempton King George fall and he was racing over a trip someway short of his optimum – but he had so much in hand on official ratings yesterday that he should have made much lighter work of it.

Trainer Gordon Elliott revealed after the race that Don Cossack will be fitted with cheekpieces for his next run at Cheltenham. He said: “He worked in cheekpieces the other day and flew in them and while there was no point having them on today, he’ll have them on in the Gold Cup.”

At Dundalk tonight check out DAQMAN’s preview of the 7.30 and 8.30 races.

It looks a tough card for punters. I have been waiting for the second run of the Tommy Stack trained A Shin Impala who runs in the Big Bad Bob Maiden at 7.00. He went into my notebook first time out when finishing a good second here to In Her Stride over 7f and was staying on strongly suggesting the mile trip should prove ideal. He pulled nicely clear of the third horse and there doesn’t look too much strength in depth here.

Am hoping there are no non-runners as I don’t particularly want the Aidan O’Brien trained first reserve Birthplace to be parachuted into the race!
