SHAMROCK ON FRIDAY: DUNDALK and DOWN ROYAL both race today but the big bucks are on offer Stateside for the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita. Can Aidan O’Brien land another big race success?
As I said earlier in the week Aidan O’Brien has a superb record in the Breeders’ Cup – lying third in the list of all-time trainers at the prestigious meeting but things might get tougher this year with what looks a slightly depleted challenge.
Certainly the news on Wednesday that Magician is out of the Breeders’ Cup Turf, the race he won last year, was a body blow.
There are four Breeders’ Cup races on the Friday card at Santa Anita and War Envoy goes for O’Brien in the opening Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. He was last seen when finishing fifth to Full Mast in the Group 1 Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp.
The issue here is whether he will stay the mile and I will take the BETDAQ strategy of backing him to win and also place laying as an insurance. There’s method in the madness. I’m basically saying that if he stays he will win but I don’t expect him to place.
Aidan O’Brien also runs Qualify tonight in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at 10.50.
I like her chances. She comes into this on the back of a comfortable win in the Group 3 Park Stakes at the Curragh and can go close in what looks a wide open renewal.
