NOT QUITE: SHAMROCK got a great run from his nap on Thursday, debutant Sierra Sun in the final race at Fairyhouse who finished strongly to be only beaten a head into second place at juicy odds of 11/2.

One more stride and Sierra Sun would have got there. It was nevertheless a good run and further evidence of how well Dermot Weld’s horses are running.

It will be a weather watch for Weld in terms of his Tarfasha running in the Epsom Oaks a week today. He has said that she won’t run if the ground is soft, with Royal Ascot and the Irish Oaks alternatives.

The same ground concerns also apply of course for Aidan O’Brien and hot favourite Australia in the Derby.

After riding Amazing Maria at the course yesterday on their Breakfast With The Stars morning Frankie Dettori said the Epsom going was: ‘mostly soft but between the 3 and 5 pole on the heavy side’.

There shouldn’t be too many alarm bells at the moment though as the Epsom surface can dry very quickly thanks to its chalk base and clerk of the course Andrew Cooper said: “For a dry day, you will easily move a ‘going point’ in a day.”

Tramore looks set fair for this evenings meeting with good ground forecast. In the maiden hurdle at 6.45 Glenteeneasaigh is disputing favouritism on BETDAQ. He was third (at 40/1) last time out over 2m 4f at Killarney but was beaten a long way and my reading was that he needs a shorter trip not the extra furlong he gets tonight.

In contrast, Well Tuned looks set to relish the trip and also has the better ground which I think she needs to show her best. Her only win came on good to firm ground and whilst it’s not that tonight she did run well at Limerick last time when third in good ground.
