It was a superb seasonal reappearance from Djakadam and my only reservations about him being a little ring rusty were completed unfounded.
It was a positive front running ride from Ruby Walsh onboard the Gold Cup runner-up who jumped well throughout the race and quickly brushed off the challenge of stable companion Valseur Lido in a “how dare you get close to me” kind of way and there was 12 lengths between them at the line in a Mullins 1-2.
The trainer said after the race: “”I wasn’t happy with him during the week and was nearly not going to run, but to run like that after the way he was, I’m absolutely delighted with him. He just wasn’t right but as Punchestown is our home track I could leave the decision until this morning. If the race was run in England it wouldn’t have been as easy and I would have had to make a decision during the week. It was some performance considering everything.”
He added: “There is no decision at the moment on where he will go next.”
Ladbrokes now have Djakadam at 8/1 to go one better at Cheltenham in March.
