NO IRISH RACING ON MONDAY: SHAMROCK looks back at the key stories from the Champions Day meeting at Ascot on Saturday.
There’s no Irish racing on Monday. The action resumes at Gowran Park on Tuesday.
Dermot Weld has issued an upbeat report on Saturday’s Qipco Champion Stakes winner Fascinating Rock and believes he could be even better as a five-year-old.
Weld told At The Races: “Pat (Smullen) gave him a brilliant ride, the horse was in great order and he had the ground he likes. It was a really good Group One, they went a cracking gallop all the way and the best horses fought it out.”
“He’s a huge horse and he’s a much better horse now than he was as a three-year-old and he’s a horse to look forward to for the future.”
“I’ve been lucky enough to have had a number of five-year-olds who got better with age and I see no reason why he won’t. He’s the classic stayer with speed.”
Meanwhile Aidan O’Brien is regretting his decision to run Gleneagles on Saturday. He said: “He seems to be fine. The ground has been holding us up all year and I was saying ‘no’ (to him running) all year. We always do what is right for the horse and he is a very low moving, very fast miler and I should have said no again on Saturday. We’ll do a little bit with him in the morning and we’ll also make an entry (for the Breeders’ Cup) in the morning.”
