IRISH GRAND NATIONAL DAY AT FAIRYHOUSE: Fortune wasn’t kind to SHAMROCK yesterday when his NAP Ballycasey fell when going well two out. He’s back at Fairyhouse today for the big race.
We were surely unlucky yesterday? Ballycasey was two lengths up and travelling well before coming to grief at the second last when he got in too tight in the Powers Gold Cup.
Hopefully better luck today on Irish Grand National day. The big race has proved a bookmakers / layers benefit in recent years and another ultra-competitive renewal is in prospect with a now 29 strong field in the absence of Los Amigos.
On BETDAQ it’s 13.5 the field which looks about right and surely most players will be filing this in the ‘too difficult’ tray ?
I’m having two small bets at opposite ends of the weights.
Like many in the field we have to make an educated guess about ability to see out the marathon trip but My Murphy makes some appeal. He is relatively lightly raced, goes well here at Fairyhouse and comes here on the back of a win last time out at Navan. He is best ridden prominently and can make a bold show.
At the other end of the weights The Westener Boy is one that could run well. He came back to form over hurdles recently and was a faller when fancied for the Thyestes Chase. I have a suspicion that he is a VERY well handicapped horse at present.
I’m saving the NAP until last.
Marinero in the closing flat race. He shaped well on debut when second at Leopardstown and can see off the Willie Mullins trained Bosman Rule who has finished runner-up in all three starts – two times being a beaten favourite.
SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Marinero (6.35 Fairyhouse)
WIN (split stakes) MY MURPHY and THE WESTENER BOY (5.00 Fairyhouse)
