GALWAY FESTIVAL: Starts this evening at 5.10. It’s a seven race mixed card on Monday and the ground is currently good to yielding. SHAMROCK has notes for all races.
I’ll be looking at each of the races from Galway this week.
5:10 Radissonhotelgalway.com & Galwaybayhotel.com Novice Hurdle (4yo, 2m, 9 runners)
Will it be another Dermot Weld benefit meeting. If my life depended on it…I’d say ‘yes’ as he is peerless when it comes to Galway. Like the turning of the tide and the sun rising in the morning Dermot Weld at Galway has supernatural powers. He will no doubt be bidding to make his usual flying start to the meeting. He has won this opening race for three of the last four renewals and relies on Manhattan Swing this year who was last seen on the flat when a close second in a mile and a half handicap at Leopardstown. This looks quite competitive though and Weld may have to give second best to Henry Higgins who was a well backed winner on the flat last time out and is dropped in class on the jumps having last contested a Grade 2 at Fairyhouse.
5:40 Easyfix Rubber Products Handicap Hurdle (88-109) (4yo+, 2m, 23 runners)
No Weld trained runner here and it looks a mighty tough handicap puzzle. Roman Numeral makes speculative appeal on a win and place basis. He comes here fresh after a break and is on for the hat-trick – but confidence is tempered a little by his rapid rise in the weights. At bigger odds, Beckwith Star is interesting having been beaten only a short head over the fences at Killarney last time out.
6:10 claregalwayhotel.ie (C & G) E.B.F. Maiden (2yo, 7f, 9 runners)
The first flat race of the Festival and Weld is on for the four-timer in this event. He relies upon Postulation who made a creditable debut behind Gleneagles (winner again since) at the Curragh. But on that form he has something to find with Jamaica who finished third and there’s every chance the Aidan O’Brien trained grey will confirm that form.
6:45 Connacht Hotel (Q.R.) Handicap (70-100) (4yo+, 2m, 23 runners)
Although second last time out, the Weld trained Grecian Tiger was slammed 11 lengths and this looks altogether tougher. Wither Hills romped home at the Curragh and even allowing for the fact he is up in the weights and this looks much more of a test – he still is lightly raced and makes appeal in the BETDAQ place market.
7:15 Claytonhotelgalway.ie Handicap (50-80) (3yo, 7f, 11 runners)
Bobby’s Heart looks too short in the market, even allowing for the Weld factor, and he is my first lay of the meeting. The ground may suit him better today – it was soft when he flopped at the Curragh last time out but there are several live chances which you always need when considering pressing the lay button.
7:45 Pillo Hotel Handicap (60-90) (3yo, 1m 4f, 8 runners)
Annus Mirabilis is out again quickly having won well at Leopardstown on Thursday and can land this for Aidan O’Brien. He escapes a penalty and see off the main danger Primogeniture who has been well backed this morning.
8:15 Colm Quinn BMW Flat Race (4-7yo, 2m, 14 runners)
Call Vinnie can be nothing more than a speculative sggestion for the closing flat race. He impressed when winning a PTP and looks a lightly sort. Can be a final race winner for Dermot Weld on a day where he may not get his own way.
