ROSCOMMON PLACE LAY: SHAMROCK starts the week by taking on a favourite at Roscommon tonight. His nap, unusually, is a place lay on BETDAQ.
A win from the next best, Now Or Never, yesterday at 13/8 in the Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial and she won with plenty in hand – certainly more than the official one and three quarter lengths might indicate.
Winning jockey Kieren Fallon said after the race: “We’ve always liked her, I was actually disappointed when she got beat here earlier in the year but she didn’t enjoy the ground then and she really accelerated on this better ground today.
“I was impressed with her. She felt like a Guineas horse to me, with the exception of Russian Rhythm she’d be as good as any of the rest (he won the Guineas on). Sleepytime, Virginia Waters, all those.”
Irish action from Roscommon tonight where the ground remains soft.
Seven fillies go to post for the maiden at 6.40pm and I want to be against the mare Queen Alphabet. She is lightly raced on the flat but has plenty of jumps form where her career wins have all come on good ground or better.
To be fair, her principal rivals haven’t much proven form on soft ground either but the race could be ripe for an upset and at around 1.7 at the time of writing I’ll take the limited downside risk of laying her for a place (1,2 in this race) on BETDAQ.
