NO IRISH RACING TODAY: SHAMROCK looks back at Navan on Sunday including Cootamundra’s surprise win in the Ladbrokes Troytown Handicap Chase.
We have to wait until Wednesday evening for the first meeting of week in Ireland with Dundalk’s card.
It was a cracking card at Navan yesterday and even though my nap was beaten I couldn’t fail but to be impressed with Noel Meade’s Apache Stronghold who was a very impressive winner of a competitive renewal of the Grade 2 ‘Monksfield’ Novice Hurdle at Navan on Sunday.
Meade said: “I thought it was a very strong race beforehand and to win like that is a real bonus.
“Paul said he was cantering all the way and he jumped well apart from the last.
“He didn’t jump that well the last time in Punchestown – he was a bit lairy when he hit the front.
“He’s something to look forward to and the obvious race is to come back here for the Grade 1 Navan Novice Hurdle (December 15).
Also on the card Cootamundra picked a terrific moment to win over fences for the first time ever as he carried off the Ladbrokes Troytown Handicap Chase.
Representing a lesser-known jockey and trainer, Robbie Moran and Wexford-based John Berry, the 25-1 chance had been set some ambitious targets in the past but had often flattered to deceive.
