LUCKY SHAMROCK TRIES A 200-1 DOUBLE: It’s the eve of the English Guineas and rain has dampened enthusiasm for the Irish favourite at Newmarket. Time for a Shamrock tonic of a 200-1 double at Dundalk and Kilbeggan!
Trainers are creatures of habit. And like any man – or woman – when we find that something works for us, we plan to make it happen again (if we have the sense).
So it is that I’m punting a big-odds double today – but one winner will do – from horses trying to take the same race two years running.
Artiste Bay (7.55 Kilbeggan) will be carrying a few pounds less than when winning this chase last season. Returned to racing two weeks back to open the tubes for today: 15.0 on BETDAQ this morning, as I write.
Darraghs Day (9.05 Dundalk) goes well fresh and has Wednesday’s rider of a Dundalk double to liven his enthusiasm: 13.5 on BETDAQ.
A ‘Day’ and ‘Bay’ dream double works out at somewhere better than 200-1. I’ll buy that to an old punt.
The gamble this morning for Dundalk has been on Mark Johnston’s raider Van Ellis (7.05), and the Kilbeggan coup, if you can call it that, seems to be Turnonthegas (6.55), trying to beat the handicapper after winning well at Ballinrobe on Tuesday.
Van Ellis and Turnonthegas will be my short-odds bets and, if doubled, will pay for my 200-1 fling. At least, that’s the hopeful view.
