NO IRISH RACING TODAY: But it’s the calm before the storm with Royal Ascot 24 hours away and Shamrock will be marking your card for the Irish trained runners throughout the week. On the domestic front Sligo race on Tuesday and today Shamrock has napped an Irish-bred runner at Wolverhampton.
The 3.30 at Wolverhampton this afternoon looks a decent quality maiden for a Monday afternoon on the all-weather and several of the top yards have runners including Sir Michael Stoute who puts blinkers on Savida for the first time.
Stoute’s form has been very quiet by his own high standards and Savida could provide a welcome winner in a race where it’s almost certain an Irish bred horse will win – just a question which one?
Mark Johnston’s New Drama shaped well over 10 furlongs on debut at Newcastle but I’m not convinced than the extra distance will suit and we also don’t know yet about her ability to handle the all-weather.
Moratab from Roger Varian’s yard has the same concerns. He has been placed in two efforts on turf and was beaten by a 50/1 shot when odds-on at Ripon last time.
Back to Savida, her head second to Ballyheigue at Kempton last month was enough to convince me she is the one most certain to handle conditions and get the trip.
