20-1 MAYO MAY UPSET THURLES FAVOURITE: Shamrock , who landed an odds-on nap yesterday, tries a 21.0 Betdaq-value attack on the first–race favourite at Thurles this afternoon.
12.35 Thurles Mayo Mystique’s yard won this off a similar mark two years back. This front-runner is your back-and-lay bet: 21.0 this morning.
The one unlikely to let him get away with it is Quel Esprit, but he has to confirm that his jumping is now up to standard, having been a bit of a Mikael D’Haguenet so far.
1.05 Thurles No sign of a winning favourite in this race’s history; in fact, the 2011 winner was 33-1, as befits a beginners’ chase.
That may not stop Bertie’s Dream but I like False Messenger, getting the mares’ allowance and being claimed off, for a total of 12lb with which to bridge the gap.
1.40 Thurles I wouldn’t want to back one of the top four in the handicap in this bog. Cochise is the Thurles horse but is 11 now. Varda’s Supreme is better than the bare form and the Philip Rothwell yard is flying.
2.10 Thurles Willie Mullins won the first running of this sure enough, but they forgot to back Skorcher; he started 8-1. Willie has Quaquo De Flotte dropped in class here and will start shorter than that.
3.15 Thurles (Munster Hurdle) The stats tell us that, on this ground, we should avoid the top four in the handicap.
Philip Rothwell has again engineered a bottomweight, this time with Mark Me Up, and I shall bet today as if one of the Rothwell weight-watcher ploys will work: Varda’s Supreme or Mark Me Up.
