THE LAST SHALL BE FIRST: Shamrock reckons there’s a good thing in the last race of the day at Galway. Meanwhile he’s baffled by the Betdaq betting in the beginners chase, so plumps for an 18.5 outsider.

Apart from his winning impressively at Roscommon, the Charlie Swan yard has had another similar bumper romp recently. It’s when you know a stable has a yardstick at home that you can go in with a decent bet.
Swan has had two winners of this race – and one placed – from four runners, and Nina Carberry has also won it twice. They look an invincible team here.
The beginners’ chase (4.50) is intriguing: Alpha Ridge and Fists Of Fury have been professional losers over hurdles, with a string of places each.
So I fancied Last Instalment, who goes well fresh and I always thought would make a chaser after a solid hurdles career.
Then Davy Russell chooses Fists Of Fury over Last Instalment, one Gigginstown horse over another, so he ought to know the time of day.
Then I turns to the Betdaq market and finds Last Instalment shorter than Fists Of Fury. Who’s kidding who? I shall swerve the short prices at the front of the market (2.93, 3.7, 3.83? Can’t get involved in that).
The mares get an allowance so I’ll stick with Charlie Swan today and take a bit of the 18.5 Lonesome Dove each way.
I’ll try to buy my bets by laying Montan (5.20), paper favourite yet first start under Rules and with trainer Tony Martin badly out of form and without a win at Galway in 11 years of trying.
