GAMBLE AS WELD HORSE RETURNS IN BLINKERS: Shamrock joins in a gamble at Leopardstown today as a Dermot Weld runner returns from a long absence, blinkered for the first time.
LEOPARDSTOWN: I’m looking for an edge in the handicaps today and it seems that the further they go at Leopardstown, the better the chance of low-drawn horses as they rail around this looping circuit.
Stalls 1, 3, 4 and 5 have won the 5.35 in the last six years and there’s a plunge horse drawn one today: Dermot Weld’s New Phase hasn’t run for 134 days, and that was over jumps, but he’s been hammered in to 4.0 favourite on BETDAQ at the time of writing, blinkered for the first time.
The outsider in the race is the unexposed Edward O’Grady gelding, Tugboat, in his first handicap: 13.5 on BETDAQ is far too big, with improvement likely.
TRAMORE: The one they wanted this morning was Fever Pitch (5.15), a much better gelding than the bare form.
Fever Pitch returns to the scene of his maiden success in a race which is lacking in the way of talent, which explains why Cloughmile is giving weight away all round.
I fancy my chances dutching Cloughmile and Fever Pitch and doubling them (2 x 2) with that low-drawn pair at Leopardstown.
SHAMROCK’S BETS
NAP: New Phase (5.35 Leopardstown)
WIN: Cloughmile and Fever Pitch (both 5.15 Tramore)
EACH-WAY: Tugboat (5.35 Leopardstown)
DAQ DOUBLES (2 x 2): Cloughmile and Fever Pitch (5.15 Tramore) with New Phase and Tugboat (5.35 Leopardstown
