IRELAND’S CHAMPIONS: Shamrock looks back on a sensational Champions Day at Ascot with Frankel bowing out in glory and four Irish-trained winners.
It couldn’t have been scripted any better yesterday. Frankel signed off his truly remarkable career with win number 14 – it wasn’t his most spectacular win, but that didn’t matter – he heads to stud with a pristine record of 14 straight wins. Well done Team Frankel and thanks for the memories.
It also makes you realise just how good Excelebration is – and it was perfect to see Excelebration win the other Group 1 race on the card the Queen Elizabeth Stakes with such contemptuous ease. There was a small moment of panic when Joseph O’Brien found himself in a pocket but he had so much horse under him that he was able to give away ground to get out of trouble and still win with such ease.
That capped a fantastic day for Irish trained runners at Ascot with the first four winners on the card. Dermot Weld deserving special mention for a remarkable feat in getting Rite Of Passage back after a lengthy absence to win the opener.
Chrysanthemum won the Listed race at Cork yesterday in a driving finish and at the time of writing she is still an intended runner in the Garnet Stakes, another Listed contest at Naas this afternoon.
This is tougher though and she had a hard race in testing ground and the play has to be Manieree who faces her easiest task for a while.
SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Manieree (3.25 Naas)
