BOROLEE’S BETDAQ VALUE AT 13.0: Shamrock grabbed morning offers of 13.0 about Borolee at Clonmel on the strength of his previous win in the same race on the same heavy ground. That price is ‘a bonus’, he says.

You want a Clonmel horse on heavy ground at Clonmel. So I’ve always been told and the beginners’ chase bears out the truth in that.

The last three winners had already won on the course over hurdles, so Big Game Hunter and The Shepherd have an edge over the favourite, Som Amix.

In any case, Son Amix, runner-up in his first chase at Listowel, has now racked up six seconds from his last nine runs and has that ever-the-bridesmaid look about him, though it has to be said that some of the grey’s efforts were in much better class than this race.

He’s living off his four-lengths second in the Pertemps Final at the Cheltenham Festival, and thought potentially good enough for the Fort Leney at Leopardstown at the end of this month.

But Big Game Hunter (2.35) has the benefit of two chase starts already, involving one or two classy types like Donnas Palm, and he’s a Clonmel winner of a big-field hurdle.

Charlie Swan, who won the stayers’ maiden (1.05) with Lonesome Dove a year back, saddles the consistent mare, Taraval, dropped back to the CD and soft ground where she was the ‘moral’ in October, beaten narrowly conceding weight.

Liz Doyle’s Borolee (3.05) broke his duck over fences in this race in 2009 – going heavy – and has clearly been lined up for it again, still only eight and with a run back in October likely to put him spot on for it at a bonus 13.0 on Betdaq, as I write.

The grand master of Irish racing, Willie Mullins, moves one of his bigger pieces on to the board, Blackstairmountain (2.05), who can be the hub of my Daq Trio.
