FOUR NAPS IN A ROW FOR SHAMROCK: Shamrock’s nap was just what the doctor ordered yesterday, a tonic four on the trot, thanks to Dr Machini (WON 6-4), following Lastkingofscotland (WON 4-1), Hats And Heels (WON 5-6) and Hada Men (won 1-6). He also named Dooney Rock (WON 5-1) at Fairyhouse.

Double your money or run for cover? Everything I pick out this morning to try to land my fifth consecutive winning nap seems to drift alarmingly.

Warning bells have put me off Waterunder (4.05), the Irish-points winner who has joined David Pipe, and has 15 lengths to spare on known form over Danandy. Yet he is out to 5.9, as I write, bigger than Danandy!

Waterunder was close to double his forecast price of 5-2. The early-doors money was for the top weight, Ace Fighter Pilot.

Similar story in the opening novices’ handicap hurdle, where the Irish-bred Johnny Owen, paper favourite at a forecast 4-6, was easy to back at 2.53 in the face of a run on Dirty Deal (6.8 though forecast 16-1).

Yes, Johnny Owen has to face a 14lb penalty but Dirty Deal has recently been beaten grades lower than this, in a seller, and second favourite, Anay Turge, is a bridesmaid, runner-up eight times yet still a maiden after 17 starts.

In the end I chose front-runner Piceno (1.25 Southwell) to beat the 573-days absent Liteup My World and McConnell, who looks vulnerable at the top of a handicap, having had to resort to a claimer and a seller recently.

SHAMROCK’S BETS
NAP: Piceno (1.25 Southwell)
NEXT BEST: Johnny Owen (1.05 Fontwell)
