WINNING NAP ON WEDNESDAY: Shamrock headed to Southwell on Wednesday to oppose one horse. His nap was a lay of Parisian Princess – 3rd at 4/5.
I was forced to look elsewhere on Wednesday following the abandonment of Gowran Park and was pretty glad I did. It was one bet and one winner, or loser depending on semantics. The nap was a lay of Parisian Princess who went off odds-on despite having her first run on the surface. The Fibresand surface at Southwell is unique and long may it continue as it often gives us an edge. I would pretty much NEVER back a horse who is unproven on this quirky surface and that strategy proved correct on Wednesday when Parisian Princess finished a well beaten, seven length third.
We’ve lost the evening card at Tramore tonight because of the weather but racing goes ahead at Leopardstown on surprisingly ‘summerish’ ground – good, good to firm in places.
There’s a Group 3 race on the card, the Desmond Stakes at 7.25 which has attracted a field of 10 including Royal Ascot winner Duntle who I still remember for winning her Dundalk maiden by 18 lengths !!!
I’ve just a feeling though that she is caught between Listed and Group level and may find this tough. She was fourth in a Group 3 after her Dundalk romp and the Sandringham Handicap she won at Royal Ascot was a Listed event.
BETDAQ favourite is Takar who is on for the the hat-trick following wins here at Leopardstown and last time out at the Curragh where he won a shockingly poor Minstrel Stakes (Group 3 but heavy ground led to three runners and he went off 1/7). He’s hard to assess as his form has all come with give in the ground apart from when he was only 9th of 10 on good ground – but that was in the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh.
The bet may be Requisition who is stepping up in class but improving and has proven form on the ground.
