TIPPERARY: Group 3 Fairy Bridge Stakes is tonight’s highlight on the Tipperary evening card, but first a word on Frankel and his win at York.
We got the place on St Nicholas Abbey yesterday which was the only real way I could figure out of betting on the race. The price was much better (respectively) than Frankel’s win price and with the small element of doubt on stamina about Frankel I thought this was the best way to play the race.
But in the end punting took a massive backseat as all you can do is sit back and admire the great Frankel and the scenes with trainer Sir Henry Cecil in the winners enclosure (and captured perfectly on the Racing Post front page today) tugged at all the heartstrings.
There’s not much more to say about Frankel apart from we’ll miss him so much when he’s gone. His next race (how lovely would it be to say ‘races’ plural) is still likely to the the Champion Stakes and then retirement to stud beckons. He’s already very short for the Arc – but he’s not entered and remember Sir Henry Cecil was always pretty clear about the roadmap. It would be great to see him stepped up again to 1m 4f and there can be little doubt about him getting the trip after his performance yesterday. I certainly didn’t spot any signs of him stopping. The ultimate finale would undoubtedly be a trip to Santa Anita for the Breeders’ Cup – after all he was named after the great Bobby Frankel but that’s almost a 500/1 chance.
Small fields dominate at Tipperary tonight and just three runners contest the opener – two from Aidan O’Brien’s yard. What a shocking turnout for a €9k race but the going remains heavy at Tipperary.
In the Fairy Bridge Stakes at 6.20 there a couple of interesting British raiders but the call has to be on Yellow Rosebud who is officially the best horse in the race and was unlucky not to win at Galway last time out.
