MUM’S THE WORD AT AYR: Shamrock goes nap on an unraced bumper contender being whispered for Ayr this afternoon but looks forward to an informative trials meeting on Saturday.
It’s the last dry day of the week. Irish racing is back at Fairyhouse tomorrow, followed by Clonmel (Thursday), Dundalk (Friday) and Gowran Park (Saturday).
Gowran Saturday is Red Mills day, with the chase on a high, having provided the Ryanair third two years running. It had a Gold Cup third (Forget The Past 2006) not so long ago, and was the first trial win for Moscow Express going back 10 years.
But the hurdle has outshone the chase as a test of young blood, with its winners in the decade including Hardy Eustace, Macs Joy, Newmill, Catch Me, Solwhit and, last year, Dunguib.
Of the Northern-Irish-trained attack on Ayr today, Top Brass (1.20) merits a bit each way, with James Black booking a leading David Pipe conditional.
Gemstone Star (1.50) wouldn’t have to improve much on his Punchestown seventh of 23 but that was 18 months on. There’s a strong word for Irish-bred Mumgos Debut (5.05), whose ‘Mum’ won the Galway Hurdle.
SHAMROCK’S BETS
NAP: Mumgos Debut (5.05 Ayr)
NEXT BEST: The Tracey Shuffle (2.20) Ayr)
OUTSIDER: Top Brass (1.20 Ayr)
DAQ MULTIPLES: the above three in doubles and a treble.
