13-2 SHOT IS ‘KING’ IN TWO OUT OF TWO: Shamrock yesterday devoted his column to two each-way bets at Exeter. Both were successful: Allthekingshorses (WON 13-2) and the gambled-on Gunna Be A Devil (WON 11-4).
NAP AND DOUBLE: This follows Tuesday’s nap and double with Best Served Cold (WON 13-8) and Groody Hill (WON 11-8, nap) at Wexford.
Last time out at Merrion Square: a night to remember after the all-Ireland football final. First time out under Rules for Merrion Square today (1.15 Chepstow): another winner for Ruby Walsh.
The novice-hurdle prize is hardly the ‘Sam Maguire’ but Merrion Square won an Irish Point comfortably and trainer Paul Nicholls has taken this race three times in four years, including with a subsequent Tolworth Hurdle winner.
One of those winners, back in 2008, reappearing after a long absence, was The Gossmoor Yank, another Irish-bred who returns to the track in the 3.30 handicap hurdle, after an even longer disappearing act.
But the going is heavy and top weights will find it tough against those down the handicap like Bring On The Judge, who ran well in a bog last season and is with Nigel Twiston-Davies, who currently has close on a 50% win-and-place strike rate with his last 38 runners.
Merrion Square and Bring On The Judge make up a strong Daq Multiples double for me today but I’ll try two more speculative each-way bets.
Firstly, I note that James Reveley is at Chepstow for one mount, Kateal (1.50), a mare in love with the mud and with a good record when fresh.
Then I see that Jaclyn Tyrrell thinks it worth a trip over from Kildare, taking Ben Curtis with her to Kempton Park tonight for Vigano (8.10): just an old punt each way.
SHAMROCK’S BETS
NAP: Merrion Square (1.15 Chepstow)
NEXT BEST: Bring On The Judge (3.30 Chepstow)
EACH WAY: Kateal (1.50 Chepstow) and Vigano (8.10 Kempton)
