LISTED ACTION AT NAAS: It’s the Naas Oaks Trial at 8.00 tonight and SHAMROCK expects Dermot Weld to collect the prize again with Caponata.
Caponata has to improve to win this Listed content – but improvement is almost guaranteed after her sole start – an impressive debut success at Gowran Park where she picked up readily to storm home by 5 1/2 lengths with a further 4 1/4 lengths back to the third and the odds-on favourite Wonderful back in fourth.
Weld won this race last year with Sapphire who herself beat another of today’s challengers Betterbetterbetter easily at Cork last time out.
As well as Betterbetterbetter, Aidan O’Brien also runs Demurely and Soon but Weld’s filly is preferred and she can take this en route to Group races.
In the opener, Nurpur probably achieved more on debut than her raced rivals and should make light work of this.
Alkazim doesn’t have the profile of a horse I usually follow (nine races and still a maiden) but on closer inspection he has little to beat here and to say this represents a massive drop in class after the Irish 2000 Guineas goes without saying.
SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Nurpur (6.00 Naas)
NEXT BEST: Alkazim (6.30 Naas)
TREBLE: Caponata (8.00 Naas)
