CLASSIC DAY IN IRELAND: SHAMROCK previews the three Group and one Listed races at the Curragh including the 2000 Guineas.

Before a Classic day – a look back to yesterday’s NAP at Cork, Regusci, who was in third before falling two out. I think he was probably held at the time, but was still travelling so you can’t be sure.

A superb day of racing at the Curragh.

Here are my notes on the four featured races….

2:15 Cold Move European Breeders Fund Marble Hill Stakes (Listed) (2yo, Class 1, 5f, 6 runners)

So little form to go on with these precocious two-year-olds. I thought that Joseph O’Brien had potentially picked the wrong one in favouring Coach House to Stubbs who won so well at Navan last weekend. However, Stubbs has been withdrawn which has left Coach House at 1.8 on BETDAQ. It’s hard to look beyond him now. He bolted home to lose his maiden tag at Tipperary and the form has worked out well.

SELECTION: Coach House (NAP)

2:45 Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes (Group 3) (3yo+, Class 1, 6f, 17 runners)

This is a bit more like it. A hugely competitive race for a Group 3 (as it should be). Jim Bolger’s Leitir Mor looks massively overpriced at 16 for a horse that already has a Group 3 win here at the Curragh to his name over this 6f trip. He was used to help set the pace for stablemate Dawn Approach in the Newmarket 2000 Guineas and faded away once beaten and his job was done. But back at this trip and on this ground is worth a second glance. Don’t forget he’s finished placed in 10 of his 13 starts.

SELECTION: Leitir Mor (PLACE)

3:20 Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas (Group 1) (3yo, Class 1, 1m, 10 runners)

There’s an Aidan O’Brien quartet but unlike the betting the official ratings say his Gale Force Ten and George Vancouver are jointly the best horses in the race. The market prefers the potential of Magician who looked good when winning the Dee Stakes at Chester but I’m not totally convinced today at around 3.85 when you consider he has yet to race on ground as fast as this and he looks likely to do better over longer distances. Fort Knox will be the result that the headline writers want and good luck to trainer (and jockey!) Johnny Murtagh but he still has to improve further and there is a going concern too. The obvious one for me is Van Der Neer for an English success. His third to Dawn Approach at Newmarket in the 2000 Guineas is solid form and if Jim Bolger can’t win this with Trading Leather then he’ll not doubt be cheering for Van Der Neer who was 7 1/4 lengths behind his star Dawn Approach at Newmarket.

SELECTION: Van Der Neer

3:55 Abu Dhabi Stakes (Fillies’ Group 3) (4yo+, Class 1, 1m, 8 runners)

It could be another for the English raiders with Chigun for Sir Henry Cecil. She has been very strong in the market this morning and was only chinned by a short head in the Group 3 Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket last time.

SELECTION: Chigun

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Coach House (2.15 Curragh)
NEXT BEST: Chigun (3.55 Curragh)
PLACE: Leitir |Mor (2.45 Curragh)
WIN: Van Der Neer (3.20 Curragh)
