GOWRAN PARK ON SATURDAY: SHAMROCK’S Saturday NAP runs in the opening race at 2.20. And he’s looking towards flat maestro Aidan O’Brien.
It seems odd, on the eve of the flat season starting tomorrow, to be discussing an Aidan O’Brien runner at Gowran Park over hurdles this afternoon – but his Shield will be many peoples idea of the banker of the day in the opener.
He’s running up a sequence of second places but should be able to put that right in this company.
Certainly, if he can reproduce his effort at Naas when second to Katie T that should easily prove good enough. Katie T went on to win a Grade 3 race at Limerick so the form looks solid. That race came over a two mile trip and Shield was second again when running over three miles, also at Naas, last time out. This mid-trip of 2m 4f today should prove ideal.
The Mystro has hinted at ability in two starts at Clonmel – but they both came on bottomless ground and it remains to be seen how effective he is on the better surface today.
We’re not going to get rich backing Shield – but I’ve put up a couple at a good price this week (two 5/1 NAPS – one of which won) so am happy to take around 50% return on investment today.
Tomorrow: Roll on the flat !
