2000 GUINEAS DAY: SHAMROCK previews the three Group races on 2000 Guineas Day at the Curragh.
Sad to report that yesterday’s NAP Gone To Russia was pulled up injured during the opening five furlong sprint at Cork yesterday.
Irish Guineas weekend with three Group races on the Saturday card including the big race itself, the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas at 5.40pm.
5:05 Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes (Group 2) (4yo+, Class 1, 6f, 8 runners)
This is a race that British raiders have had a good record in over recent years and the trend could well continue today with Don’t Touch who bids to extend his unbeaten sequence to seven. That’s quite a rarity in itself (excluding Mr Frankel of course). Richard Fahy’s runner has won two competitive handicaps – the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon and the Ayr Gold Cup. This is first stab at Group level but he is still officially the best horse in this race and can continue the success story.
5:40 Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas (Group 1) (3yo, Class 1, 1m, 8 runners)
Air Force Blue gets the chance to prove his run in the Newmarket Guineas form was all wrong and has plenty of ground to make up on the winner Galileo Gold and stable companion Air Vice Marshall (4th). Aidan O’Brien has won four of the last five runnings of this but I can’t be backing Air Force Blue at around 3/1. Awtaad is interesting at slightly bigger prices but I’m sticking with GG to complete the Guineas double.
6:15 Lanwades Stud Stakes (Fillies’ Group 2) (4yo+, Class 1, 1m, 7 runners)
Lucida is a lay for me after an absence of 316 days. She’s a class act and despite beating only one home when sixth of seven in the Group 1 Qipco Falmouth Stakes was only beaten just over a length! She would have to be close to her best to win this and there must be every chance that some of the more race fit fillies might win the battle today if not the war that is the season.
